Lets be honest, if it happens it'll be JANKY as FUCK and just not work most of the time, because Britain isn't actually that Great.
 
I won't be too upset about having one, I was happy to be registered as a FOREN in Spain to participate in society, but that was a fucking ballache and a half too.
 
I'm pretty much unbothered, if it makes some bureaucracy easier then grand, but I'm sympathetic to some of the arguments against, particularly what it would be like with something like a Farage government in charge of that information.

What I don't understand is why when they are so hated already, Labour think this is a good idea. It is surely only going to make things worse for them?

I don't particularly care either way, but the money it's going to cost to get it set up could be better spent on so many other more important things.

And jumping on the "it'll crack down on illegal immigrants working" bandwagon is just a way to get the Tommy Robinson followers to think it's a good idea, in my opinion.
 
How is this going to stop those companies paying people that don’t work “through the books”. A lot of people who work in this country and who are not here legally surely just work many hours for below minimum wage?
 
I dislike simply because of the England flags everywhere and the underlying reasons for it/racism. :gross:

(Before an interview, being brown, I was asked whether I have proof of right to work in the UK, and I luckily did have an image of my passport, literally born in the same city, so then there was a bit of 'oh okay sweetheart' from the admin woman, haha)
 
I have no issue with the general concept of ID cards

I do have issues with why and how.

The reasoning is to prevent illegal immigrants from getting jobs by forcing everyone to present ID when applying for one. Yet when it's done properly you already give your name, address and NI number. And when it's done illegally like when the car wash hires a bunch of Romanians cash in hand off the books, why would they bother asking for ID (or address or NI number)? It's off the books. So this changes absolutely nothing.

So if it won't prevent illegal immigrants working cash in hand, then why? The most charitable interpretation is "to appear to be doing something". Those of us with more of a tinfoil hatted mind see it being digital alongside the Online Safety Act and join the dots.

If that's what it's for then why does it have to be on a smartphone?
How does it work for someone who's been unemployed for a while, has a 7 year old phone running an OS version too old for it and needs to eat and pay rent rather than buy a new one?
When it extends to something like accessing health services, how's that going to work for 86 year old Doris who can't understand these new fangled cleverphone thingies?
When it's linked to OSA and required to register for most online services from the UK, which I think is a reasonable prediction, how well is the VPN workaround going to hold up if you don't really want to volunteer your ID for the social media shitposting account, the pseudonymous web forum like this one etc?

If they can answer some of this stuff then fine. Allowing a physical alternative would be a very good start. I'm glad it's not compulsory at least (which is a different thing to mandatory)
 
a) I don't feel inclined to pay for something else, I never asked for. We already pay tax.
b) I don't care like I did back in the 00s. I was very against them then, I don't really care now. I am precious about my online identity, but it's just another Facebook I guess.
c) I am concerned about what it will know about us, being on our phones. Will it suck up photos, porn sites, weird Google searches?
d) With that in mind, and Farage cruising into power, what can he use them for? I mean he's funded by Russia. It's one thing having them under a Labour or Tory government, but under a Trump-lite fascist. No thanks.

On balance, do what you want, they'll do it anyway, but I do have concerns...
 
They have the ID cards in many European countries and it’s not an issue there, so I don’t understand what the big deal is. It would also be good for another form of ID, generally only passport and driving license is accepted and not everyone has these or can afford them.
I think the way they’re trying to roll it out is only going to cause ructions though, and is probably signing Keir Starmer’s career death warrant.
 
We've had these forever. I had to renew mine recently but haven't bothered to collect it yet cause it turns out I don't really need it for anything.🤷‍♂️
