Mariah Carey - Here For It All (New Album Out NOW)

7.0 from Pitchfork. The reviewer is a long time lamb.

Then, in a single couplet, she evokes cataracts and anilingus: “Here for the clouds in your eyes/A kiss where the sun never shines.” :D

Her voice, a force of nature that launched her career into the stratosphere, is often hoarse on the album. At times, her rasp flirts with an alternate key. 🥴

I sat with this album again yesterday night, and I think I may have judged it a little quickly. I think the shock of the unvarnished vocals was a bit much for me. And I have been deep in a Daydream lately (obsessed with Melt Away and Underneath The Stars this summer), which has made the transition to the "new voice" all the more abrupt.

Initial rank:

I think I’m on the verge of becoming a Confetti & Champagne truther

Cheers cheers cheers cheers cheers!
To me, not you, just me

:disco:

I Won't Allow it needs the single treatment, but I fear it may go unreleased as we have had 'Type Dangerous'

Pleased to report that after a slight initial disappointment upon release, several songs are well on the way to 17/10 status

should go in somewhere around top 30 then. a dumb missed opportunity - why was the UK promo blitz months ago? why no vinyl variants?

Play This Song music video not even getting a mention here. The song is a snooze. I literally can’t hear Mariah in the chorus at all.

It’ll probably be a hit now.

That's because it has its own thread!

I can easily see it sinking without a trace OR being the biggest hit of the year on R&B radio and winning a Grammy

This is growing on me. I think after my late summer holiday when I’m in my autumnal groove it’ll finally click

Not that it matters too much at this stage with her legacy but I was thinking she'd be top 10 with what seemed a fairly huge build up to the album release given the recent past eras.

The world, Mariah, us and most importantly you, can survive whether you like it or not Funk

2. Play This Song

Definitely a Silk Sonic bonus track. Feels like a missed opportunity to give us an uptempo bop from from one of the best producers of the day. But I think I'll get over that disappointment in the short term. All being said I absolutely love 70s soul and this sound is very in right now. And her voice sounds great here.

Come on Funky, *whispers* Sugah Sugar, Sweet Sweet* lets get you in the Lambily mood.

5. In Your Feelings

"A moment for a... pIcTuRe!!!!1!!" :zombie::zombie::zombie::zombie:

I think we might have found a new vocal benchmark for Mariah's slow decline. "Hey so was that live perf pre 'A MOMENT FOR A PICTURE' or after...?" Good god. The thing is, other parts of the song don't sound so bad. If I can get used to that line (why does she have to repeat it again??) I might actually grow to really like this as it's very much in line with the Paak song. Did he produce this as well?

6.5/10 with an upward trajectory

6. Nothing Is Impossible

She sounds good here. I always prefer Mariah's R&B ballads over her standard pop ballads, but the chord sequences here are quite nice. I'm not sure she should be doing the shouty final chorus template any more, and I don't even think she needs to... the smooth early verses and the outro sound quite beautiful and this could have been left without the climax. Nothing hateful here.

6/10

7. Confetti & Champagne

So far I'm not hearing much cohesion. I'm not overly bothered about that, but the shift from standard ballad to the gen-Z chasing execution of this song is a bit of a whiplash. There's an attempt at a good song here, but I hate the vocal. A good idea that didn't quite realise, and it's also too short - feels like an interlude.

Can I interest you in an AI version with Daydream vox? :eyes:

I had planned on saying - I don't know why she doesn't play with AI for her studio versions now. I think this is one place where AI should be OK - if it's the actual artists enhancing their own songs. They use vocoders all the time why not AI? I'm probably never going to see her live again anyway so who cares, even if it's just to polish up the ropey bits...

8. I Won't Allow It

OK yeah this is great. Imagine if we'd got an album of 70s & 80s funk and soul songs? Oh WELL! The production is on point, her voice sounds good - she's not straining (that much) or reaching. She sounds relaxed and at ease here. And hooks for days. The drums! The jazz piano! A certified BOP.

THAT PART!

9. My Love

I like the continuation of the 70s theme, and there's something beautifully nostalgic about it... but I don't like Mariah doing WHITE music, sorry! I never have. It also sounds too schmaltzy and MOR. BUT - big caveat - this is well executed so it might actually grow on me. AND - second big caveat - this might actually sound beautiful over Christmas...

10. Jesus I Do

I was ready to just skip this because CHRISTIAN MUSIC but omg the production on this FFS! (sorry Jesus)... what a BOP! Can she re-record this and swap Jesus for Tyrone or something? I'm so ANNOYED because this will never ever go on my playlist and it's such a WASTE! Very happy for all the religionists out there that you get to keep this SMASH! :)
