Anyone else watching? Much better this year production wise, last years ceremony in a store room was DEPRESSING.

Jacob Alon’s voice breaks me. They’re incredible

I like Sam Fender, but he doesn’t really need this, does he?
I’m happy for him, hes a pop artist sure but his passion for music and its power is undeniable.

Maybe its a decision based on where its being hosted and to make the awards relevant and newsworthy again, I dont know because I dont listen to his albums, but even if thats true I dont think its a terrible choice.

Honestly time has proven to me that this latest Sam Fender album is on another level. Clearly his collaboration with The War On Drugs produced magic, but his songwriting and delivery blows me away. There's a lot more to him than ubiquitous radio staples like "Seventeen Going Under" and "People Watching".

The soft build and crescendo of "TV Dinner" is like nothing I've ever heard...

Hypothesize a hero's rise and teach them all to then despise
It is our way to make a king, romanticize how they begin
Fetishize their struggling, while all the while they're suffering
In every worming memory of what they truly are
The rigmarole, the tortured soul, the constant spin, the merry-go
Roundhouse-kick into the face, sheer loss of private space
The moths, the snakes, the tiny waist-coat tail riders suck the grace
And little color out my face, the cancer in a padlock case...

I almost think it's a shame that all most people will hear of the album are People Watching and Rein Me In. They're lovely and all, but the most throwaway pop.

TV Dinner, Wild Long Lie, and Crumbling Empire are the better picks.

describing a song like People Watching as throwaway pop is absolutely wild to me :D does that include the verse about being there at the end of someone's life in a care home and holding their hand as they die? just some silly fun for Radio 1!!

Well YES because we all know Tilly the Radio1 listener from Leicester (and definitely not Shoat the aging old dear) isn't absorbing the verses, she's just been singing the catchy chorus thinking it's about an afternoon at Costa Coffee :(

Can vouch for that. I must have heard People Watching 50 times, and have absolutely no recollection of the verse Jark describes there :D

To this dizzy tart's ears it's just a nice bit of radio-friendly cock-pop-rock.

Feels like the most commercially successful album to win this in a long time. I like the Sam Fender album but really wanted CMAT to win to raise her profile further. Never mind. My faves are often nominated but rarely win the award!

Given that they gave it to The Token Jazz Album last year, a more overtly popular pick was likely. They do tend to react against themselves at the Mercury. I wanted a CMAT win as well but hey ho.

That was 2023 and to be fair, Ezra Collective did deserve it for making Jazz fun.

Yer, I don't mind Ezra Collective actually but, yes, I memoryholed 2024!

Who did they beat that was so scandalous now? I cant remember... possibly Portishead, Blur or Pulp?
Blur, Pulp, The Prodigy and miserable old Paul Weller

I like best of all that it wasn't even the sensible middle-aged M People album of finding heroes up inside their chuff, but instead the silliness of "I'm coming home I'm coming home.......TO YOUR HOUSE"

Bizarrely, Take That’s Everything Changes was also a nominee that year.
