Old TOTP (BBC4)

God I could WEEP for the beauty of Life is a Flower. :disco: In a fair world it would have been #1 for months.

Deeper Underground a very odd/arbitrary sole chart topper for Jamiroquai. I suppose the Godzilla connection pushed them over the edge. It's not even close to their Spotify top ten these days.

Could Aqua not be arsed to come to the studio for My Oh My?!

The Lovestation track is fun though I can’t recall that version being the version?

Oh I miss these random US star cba to be in studio so films something (was it mimed so they could easily substitute the opening shots with another clip with whatever other show he would have filmed that for?). Doesn’t beat the time some US R&b group performed in a theme park whilst rides were going on and a bored competition winner sat at the side.

Yes Godzilla was huge that summer which would have helped

I can’t help but piss myself laughing at the start of Viva Forever, Sporty, Scary and Posh giving the sultry look then fade to Baby who’s there with a massive grin on her face

Scream @ the hard cut from the riotous scenes for Vindaloo to Tina Arena delivering the vocal of a lifetime for a crowd that literally could not care less. :D
I'm up to this and honestly I've never seen a crowd more hilariously DOUR :D

is she miming? Because if not it's seriously the perf of a lifetime while serving Madonna frozen era looks. Quite gay heaven!

Such a DULL song though, no matter the vocal. Going from Vindaloo to that really was like whiplash.

Assume Puff Daddy got cut but was there anything else as the first episode seemed real short.

I Can’t Help Myself is a proper banger. Though is the outfit choice a bit wrong now?

Cackling at Brandy turning up to the TOTP studio, only for them to do what they were avoiding all this time - playing The Boy Is Mine video. Assume she was in for advance promo of her next single?

Solid HarmoniE with their only TOTP performance and singing live!

What a shame Honda Hicks biggest hit was her dullest!

Absolutely gasping at the episode after. SASH! Solid HarmoniE with a song I'm agog predated Baby... One More Time! And a truly MESMERING perf of Pure Morning!!

Last week I was asking WHEN ARE WE GETTING SOME TRANCE so that was pleasing :disco:

Also enjoyed the Baby Bumps singer just having a LOVELY TIME in front of the female Village People. I’m off to Google whether she ever did anything else.

Edit: nope can’t even find a name :basil:

Cleopatra covering the Jackson 5 a mere 3 singles in was WHOLLY UNNECESSARY & despite a number 4 peak, seems to have stopped the momentum built over 1998 in its tracks.

The Cleopatra cover really didn't even attempt to put a spin on the original, it really was just karaoke

I once worked with a girl whose sister-in-law was all but given a restraining order by Kavana's manager for constantly pestering him over social media. IN 2018!

Actually I think you'll find they changed the gender references

I'm struggling with this era. The shit is outweighing the good far more than I remember it doing at the time.

Stardust was a hit with no video? Quite odd for the time...
It came in months or maybe weeks after it was released. It had a chart boost as a result if I recall correctly. Quite a long running hit.

Andrea Corr really is arrestingly beautiful, but the outfit she has on for this What Can I Do performance looks like something a drag queen would get eliminated for on a Drag Race design challenge.

I always wondered how the other Corrs' felt having to "perform" remixes that stripped out all of their parts aside from Andrea.

You'd assume it was a big pan-European hit, but it seems to have only charted in the UK, which may explain the low streams.
It was also missing from streaming for ages

Why was Jamie Theakston superimposed over Babybird? Did they really not turn up to the studio for that week? Surely they’re not that important to do a pre record.

I assume Savage Garden was recorded the same time they finally appeared for Truly Madly Deeply, before the UK radio edit was created. Odd it’s mimed when Truly Madly Deeply wasn’t. On a miming point I didn’t expect Sweetbox to mime.

I don’t mind Cleopatra’s cover but it seemed off after three singles in six months it would then be over six months till their next.

What was the issue with Stardust not having a video? I recall it being a huge sticking point at the time and seems off given it was clearly gonna be a hit so it couldn’t have been the record label napping. Christ at the green screen where her T shirt becomes multicoloured. Poor woman, the whole thing just feels lame.

Busy Top 10 that first week - half the top 10 were new entries.

Was that Fake Hev amongst Kavana’s backing dancers, props to the guy in the audience in the foil jacket giving it some. Same with Alda.

They are getting mileage of that Spice Gurls performance with BEAMING BABY
