Finished very well and was surprisingly strong when that election was a different question being posed. Quite easy to see how she ends up as the candidate that feels like the best compromise that can still appeal to enough of the soft left without feeling a bit like putting a dud straight into Number 10.
 
I voted somebody else because I don't think it's likely that he will be overthrown. But my heart belongs to GREEN ED.

I feel like anybody perceived as being in the McSweeney camp is going to struggle, so I don't see it with Philipsson.

I'm also not sure Miliband really wants the job again. I think he just wants an ally in the role who will actually support him on energy.

McSweeney is going to be backing Shabana Mahmood all the way.

this could be correct but I think he's got by far the best shot at being popular with the public and being given half a chance for a couple of years. I would hope for him although it seems like a long shot.

I'm not sure about the machinations needed to get Burnham in place and how long that would take. the longer this goes on the more chance he has, but he's not an MP yet.

Streeting has moved notably to the left on some issues but that stinks of maneuvers and not a reflection of what he'd actually do as PM. I can't stand the idea.
 
generally I think it will be really bad for the country and really good for Farage if Labour switches leader and we get an unelected PM mid term. not beating those Tory-lite allegations.

Yes but she's already widely known to have been his pick for deputy.

If this comes down to a battle between the left and right for the soul of the party, Philipsson doesn't feel like she'd be particularly inspiring to either side.

I think he should probably hold on until close to the election and then stand down and give Labour a shot at a narrative of CHANGE again because lord knows we're doomed if he's leading the party at the next election.

Starmer is less popular than Liz Truss! If that continues, doing something is surely better than doing nothing
 
They basically have no good options. If they get rid now it looks incredibly messy, plus they basically have no strong candidates to replace him lined up thanks to Burnham not being an MP and Rayner being freshly on the outs. On the other hand, he's so historically unpopular and clearly weak at this stage, that if they hold on until after the May local elections they're going to lose scores and scores of councillors, which isn't just a bad headline, it potentially decimates their ground game for future elections.

In a one-on-one race that she did surprisingly well in. The unions quite like Phillipson, which could be potentially very influential (unless Rayner mopped them up)...

Not to mention losing Wales for the first time ever and not winning back Scotland at a point when the SNP is at it's most vulnerable going into an election. There was a news story I read a week back that it's the Scottish MPs agitating to get rid of him ASAP because he's going to be such a liability for the devolved elections

A figure that got drastically warped by the fact they changed eligibility for the voting back to a ballot being sent out to every single member of the affiliated unions, as opposed to just those that had signed up to vote (as was the case in 2020). Turnout among members wasn't much down on the 2020 race.
