They did describe her as "woefully miscast" and just "a pop star having fun while broadening her CV" in the first part so they are at least consistent haters.
 
this was really good. I enjoyed it probably more than part one - maybe because I'm not actually a fan of the big songs in part one :eyes:

I still think Michelle Yeoh is shockingly bad in both films, and the first 20-30 mins are a bit of a challenge, but it settles into a good groove and pushes all the right buttons. I almost cried at the end. the final shot is incredible.

then the evil man I saw it with spent 30 minutes tearing it apart, questioning everything right down to why we need a GOOD and EVIL binary (never mind that the script itself acknowledges this and answers the question), looking for logic that doesn't exist in every detail, demanding to know why Elpheba is EVEN GREEN, critiquing Ariana's singing (!) and generally being a whiny cunt so that was a lovely comedown.

Michelle Yeoh is so bad in the first movie but it’s camp and she’s not in it much. I can’t get over the line deliveries in The Wizard And I :D Welcome to Shiz :disco:

I remember him getting a lot of flack for Chicago. Can’t say if it’s justified, I’ve never watched it.
 
Initial thoughts:

Obviously I still LOVED it, but some of the differences in what I’m used to seeing were surprising.

I have never had any problem with the second act of the show. I love all of the main songs. Yes it’s darker than the first act but that’s supposed to happen. However, in the first film I think the only songs they really noticeably broke up were Dancing Through Life and Defying Gravity, which both have some relevant breaks for action/dialogue in the show anyway. With this part, they simple break up far too many songs, and it feels a bit jolted. I think the only song they really left alone was No Good Deed.

The lovely swift move from I’m Not That Girl (Reprise) into As Long As You’re Mine should have stayed. We didn’t need a scene between the songs.

The new songs and additional music bits weren’t really needed. Didn’t like that they changed the start of Wonderful and also added Glinda into the song (it’s always been one of the songs I loved more than most people). May just have to get used to it.

The flashback scene to Glinda’s childhood birthday party seemed a bit unnecessary and would clearly have been left on the cutting room floor if it was one film. Same for adding in scenes to show Nessarose stripping Munchkins of their rights.

Loved the fight scene! I think I heard somewhere that Ariana insisted on keeping in the bit where she swings her wand around like nunchucks. If so, thank you Ari!

The Tin Man transformation was epic. Jonathan Bailey’s Scarecrow face was a little disappointing - looked like someone had painted some Shreddies on his face.

Besides all of that, I’m still giving it a 9/10

Luckily by the time it had finished, we’d missed the crowd from the 5ive concert at The O2.

There were 3 or 4 screens used for double bills, all starting about 30 mins apart, so it wasn’t that busy as I didn’t choose the earliest one - just the one with the recliner chairs. Maybe the first screening was busier than ours. We had some people arrive just for the second film. I brought a neck pillow, but was weird seeing some people bring hooded onesies like we were in for an all night marathon rather than just 2 films.

Either way, have tomorrow off and seeing it at an IMAX again, then meeting Mel who flew in tonight for the weekend, so we can swap notes :disco:
 
I'm looking forward to seeing it at the IMAX. I wanted to get Waterloo, but they seemed to release the December dates later (maybe holding off to see how it played in November) and I didn't want to risk it as that's the week I'm in London, so I opted for the Leicester Square IMAX. Which should still be good.

As was the final shot - talk about a perfect ending.
 
I thought it was good but that the pacing was off and it felt like they were padding a second half that in the musical or in a standard full movie would have been a lot faster moving.

I enjoyed it for what it was, but Ariana is a little less impressive without as many comedic moments, and she veered a lot more into pop mumble singing in her new song.

Cynthia was great, as was Goldblum. Everyone else was fine, and visually it was stunning.

I know it is very obvious to say, but I do wonder what is like watching this if you haven't seen Wizard of Oz. Particularly when it comes to why on earth Fiyero
is suddenly the scarecrow
.

Glad I saw it all in all, and the big songs came off great. For Good did feel like it sufficed as a title track.
 
Loved it. I do agree slightly about the paving though - the first movie didn't feel at all stretched to me, but there were places in the second where I felt it did perhaps lag just a little.

Not overly fussed with the two new songs, but they didn't feel at all out of place either.

No applause other than at the end. But a very Jonathan Bailey thirsty audience with lots of murmuring and cooing whenever he was on screen.
 
We had loads of applause at the end of mine. And why do people bring their 2 year old kids who won't sit still (or quiet) throughout :argh:

LOVED this. They took so much more liberties in this to flesh it out than they did with the first half so it really felt like watching something completely new in parts.
