"All's Fair" - Ryan Murphy "legal drama" (Naomi Watts, Kim Kardashian, Glenn Close)

But there is a line between ridiculous and deliberately TERRIBLE.

Glee was camp and over-earnest, but there was a wide-eyed innocence that they genuinely believed they were making a good show in daft packaging, and the cast were all going to go on to be future Broadway megastars.

Even Scream Queens, I think Murphy had genuine belief in Emma Roberts.

This one feels immeasurably more CYNICAL, like the 0/10 reviews were a genuine marketing strategy. Nobody could have been OBLIVIOUS about how starring Kim K over Glenns and Naomis would go, no matter how many camp one-liners you script.

At least those examples were self-aware they were shit, utterly ridiculous, and over the top; I have a feeling All's Fair tries hard at being a serious show but maybe it's just me.
 
I think it's the appeal of watching something that isn't tasteful be carried out in a seemingly unchecked way.

All's Fair is very knowing. The cop saying something like "I don't suppose you have a needlessly opulent room we could go talk in?" springs to mind from the last episode I watched, plus the close up of Kim's cleavage after having a supportive heart to boob conversation.

I've always thought the same. Camp happens best when the drama is wrongfully higher than what the scene calls for. It always feels accidental or unaware. Everything I've seen from this show (and much of Murphy's work) is forced, like they're trying to SIMULATE camp.
 
Sarah Paulson is single-handedly carrying this show's worth (Don't get me wrong, I love Glenn and Naomi, I can give or take) but omg she EATS every scene because she gets it, and I am shook every time of Kim's inability to muster any type of reaction or emotion because she has decided ot kill every nerve on her face.

His American Horror Story very much went down the same path. From the start it obviously leant towards ridiculousness, but they were also happy balancing the camp with straight-faced leads like Connie Britton or Dylan McDermott.

But then they realised they got more attention with the silly Coven season, or by having Jessica Lange sing The Name Game. And then from season 4 onwards, every episode felt like Murphy trying to find ways to create memes instead of following a plot. The exception was the Roanoke season (which inevitably half of the cast and crew have since disowned).
 
This is just all too contrived and too corporate to be camp. It’s Baudrillarard’s simulacra, composed of recycled elements of camp detached from their original context, it has all the signs and symbols of camp whilst bearing absolutely no resemblance to it.
 
The scene where Glen Close’s character knows nothing about plastic surgery or anything is like - have you seen you recently - there is the suspension of disbelief… and then there is the collapse of that as a concept.
 
It’s been renewed? I’m not sure they can top Glenn Close refusing to leave her house or her dead husband for an entire episode.
 
How did Glenn Close go from Damages, one of the best TV shows ever made, to this?
 
I think it's hilarious that she could probably get anything but chooses stuff like this. from everything she and the cast have said I think they had a FAB time making it and that's probably what matters most at this point in her career
 
I apologise for my earlier comments about the actor Glenn Close, I was taking prescription medicines at the time and was using Haribo way above it's recommended portion size. As such I would now like to fully withdraw said comments as I scramble for any remaining work I may have, before a period of languishing and then ultimately having to move out of my condo in ignomany and eventual obscurity. Glenn - you deserve that Oscar one day.
 
Maybe she just liked the cheque they offered her. They won't give her the Oscar she's due at this stage, so why not.
