It's hard to see past Wham!, isn't it?

Current Ladbrokes odds

4/9 Wham!
11/2 Kylie Minogue
10/1 Diana Ross
16/1 Alison Limerick
16/1 HUNTR/X
16/1 Labrinth
16/1 Mariah Carey
16/1 Taylor Swift
18/1 Pogues
20/1 Ed Sheeran
20/1 LadBaby
20/1 Sabrina Carpenter
25/1 Christopher Lillicrap
25/1 Queen
25/1 Tate McRae
25/1 The Stone Roses

33/1 bar

I had no idea Alison Limerick's 'Where Love Lives'was in the Christmas John Lewis ad.

No idea why Diana Ross is listed - is that a Stranger Things thing? But if so, surprised Abba aren't quoted as well.

Why are the odds always so spectacularly BIZARRE?

How are Diana Ross and Alison Limerick, neither of whom are charting or in the current midweek update, really more "worthy" of better odds than current number one and ridiculous formatting and remix queen Taylor Swift?

AND WHAT THE FUCK IS CHRISTOPHER LILLICRAP UP TO?

We need something different from Wham! or Mariah again (great as they are). I'd love for Kylie to get it!

And please don't tell me LadBaby are bringing something out!

Interesting snippet I saw this morning from 1985 Smash Hits. First time the bookies took bets on the Christmas number 1.

The Christmas top 10 was as follows

🎄 UK Top Ten – Christmas 1985

PositionSong / ArtistNotes
1Merry Christmas Everyone – Shakin’ StevensOfficial Christmas No. 1 of 1985
2Saving All My Love for You – Whitney HoustonHer first UK No. 1 single
3Do They Know It’s Christmas? – Band AidRe‑entered the charts from 1984, still hugely popular
4West End Girls – Pet Shop BoysBreakthrough hit, later a No. 1
5Walking in the Air – Aled JonesFrom The Snowman, seasonal favourite
6Last Christmas / Everything She Wants – Wham!Double A‑side, perennial festive hit
7Separate Lives – Phil Collins & Marilyn MartinFrom White Nights soundtrack
8I’m Your Man – Wham!Recent chart‑topper, still in Top 10
9See the Day – Dee C. LeeSoul ballad, George Michael’s tip for success
10Dress You Up – MadonnaFrom Like a Virgin, one of her many 1985 Top 10s

Wham! already making a second appearance as was Band Aid.

Ballads and christmas songs always had wild odds compared to the end results. I remember in 1988 T'Pau's Road To Our Dream was one of the frontrunners...and then it missed the top forty.

Laufey's Spotify exclusive Winter Wonderland has re-entered the singles chart at #18 today, no doubt thanks to having been elevated to first place on Spotify's main Christmas playlist.

It first charted in 2023, peaked at #24 last year, and won't hit ACR until next year. Perhaps Spotify will be fighting Amazon and Kylie with it.

Will the official number one be the one announced on the 19th? That’ll have quite a big impact as the biggest ‘sales’ week will be the following week which includes the build up and day itself. Kylie I imagine will peak that week with autoplay on Alexa and playlists on other platforms shaping the charts.

Xmas day, the highest stream day, will also be estimated by Spotify for chart purposes I guess as well with it being a Thursday?

Presumably so, yes. Similar to last year, but ramped up another notch, due to how the days fall.

Although actually, shouldn't the Christmas songs hold on SLIGHTLY better the following week, as the next sales week starts on Boxing Day when streams do fall massively from the heights of the previous few days, but are still relatively high compared to other tracks? Last year, the next sales week started on the 27th when people are largely sick of them all, and if I recall correctly only Wham and Mariah held on at all in the chart.

Presumably last year was the biggest it is going to be, as Christmas Day was a Wednesday and therefore a “true” streaming day, whereas the Spotify stats for Boxing Day would have been calculated based on the rest of the week, giving artificially boosted stats for that day too.

This year the Christmas Day Spotify stats won’t be truly reflected, unless they’ve figured out a way to do that since last time I thought about this.

Compared to last year that will be the case - a handful more perhaps lasting the following week? Next year with Christmas Day as the first tracking day of the week will be quite interesting to see.

Kylie #5 in the first look mids

Gwen Stefani #16!

I can't really be that pleased for Kylie this time given she's only achieved it by jumping into bed with Jeff Bezos Evil

And yes there's no way Gwen is achieving that result authentically either

But the Christmas sharts are piss anyway, and I guess anything is better than Spotify forcing their royalty-free 1950s American Burl Ives nonsense

STREAM HAVE A CHEEKY CHRISTMAS OUT NOW

I love the idea of being FORCED on Amazon to listen to Kylie's under par Christmas SINGAL to then be FORCED to listen to Gwen Stefani's new one. What a time to be alive :disco:

Yes totally, but I do like the idea of Gwen having a UK top 40/20/10 single again (Sorry Ag).

Kylie legit has a chance of number 1-3 for this doesn't she which I love for her, but we were complaining for years that X factor had the monopoly, same sort of thing in terms of capturing an audience

If we MUST have Gwen (and we really musn't), I'd have preferred You Make It Feel Like Christmas which is almost listenable even if it does smell very evil Republican

I am enjoying this rather HOPELESSLY HOPEFUL attempt by the BBC to muster up enthusiasm for Christmas sharts again by pretending that Alison Limerick, the guy from Fine Young Cannibals, and one of McFly going solo 20 years too late are genuine threats for #1 :D

I'd be happily proven wrong, but I suspect this won't get the media coverage it would need. Some outlets will treat it as if it were a political statement rather than the aid appeal it is, and will steer clear.

It will be Wham or whichever blandly named pop "star" is the current whiny toast of TikTok.

I discovered this morning that many of them LIVED IN AN INFLUENCER HOUSE TOGETHER.

It's too horrific to think about.

Oh God this is the boomer hill I'm dying on.
Baby Boomers GIF

I will also be boomer and agree I can't think of a more GHASTLY concept than an "influencer house"

It sounds like the Love Island villa but PERMANENT and with LOGAN PAULS

Wham back at number one this week, denying Raye the chart topper after Taylor Swift finally fucked off to ACR. Hopefully Raye gets it in January.

I doubt it'll be #1 here but what is the Diana Ross song with a chance? 😊
