Richard X: "I was horrified by the idea of ‘Some Girls’ going to Geri Halliwell"

So, in the Right Back At Ya podcast, Richard X and Hannah were interviewed about Rachel Stevens' Come And Get It album, and they have a whole segment dedicated to Some Girls. And here are some tidbits:

  • Richard X said Geri had a video treatment from David LaChapelle for Some Girls
  • Geri had written a new middle eight for Some Girls
  • Richard X confirms Geri on the song was his worst nightmare; however, Hannah wanted Geri to do it :D
  • There's another cover from an Ex-Pussycat Doll which never saw the light of day (and it's awful, worse than Geri's AI cover)

The other highlight is Geri calling her manager and her manager telling Hannah that she would never work in this town again unless the song was promised there and then to Geri :D Who does she think she is :D

Oh to have a Geru video for Some Girls. We wuz robbed :(

I'M LEAVING

Better than Geru

As much as I enjoy Some Girls, why was there so much attention with it?!

I really don't think it would have gave Geri a massive hit.

Rachel was a young pop star, all teeth and tits. Absolutely perfect for the song conceptually. Geri was old news by then, it would not have worked.

Some Girls is a slab of pure pop genius and having Rachel Stevens sing those lyrics elevated it even further

I can’t imagine anyone else serving it the way she did

Exactly and even if it had been Geru’s first ever solo single she would have murdered it with overwrought nasal nocals. Rachel’s “generic” voice added that perfect dose of ennui to the song. It wouldn’t have worked with anyone whose voice had “character”.

I think it was that it sounded completely fresh and new. It was a leap forward sonically from her first album and from what Xenomania were doing. They were hitting their stride with Girls Aloud around the same time.

I guess, to give it some ridiculous hyperbole, it sounded a bit like the future :disco:

Could Geru do this?

Negotiate With Love > Some Girls
all the singles actually > Some Girls

a somewhat OVERRATED SONG

I will say So Good is actually not so good but the other two were magnificent. and Secret Garden? :disco: never has a WAFER VOICED CIPHER sounded so ICY AND ALLURING :disco:

01 Nothing Good About This Goodbye
02 Sweet Dreams My LA Ex
03 Negotiate With Love
04 Funny How
05 Secret Garden

they were insane not pushing NGATG earlier. or giving it to Kylie.

I have literally never heard this, was it a single?!

it was the cancelled fourth single from Come and Get It and one of many fab pop songs to be redistributed from the mythical ALEXIS STRUM album!!!

Brian also confirms this on the podcast. It was planned to be the 4th single at some point, but after I Said Never Again peaked at #12 and the album was slipping down the charts, it was cancelled. We even got a "live" performance, and that's it.

In other Rachel rejected tracks news, the podcast confirmed Catch You was offered to her before it ended up with Sophie, as well as Alexis Strum’s Me & You This Time. Every Little Thing was originally offered to Gareth Gates :D

I remember seeing a lot of praise for Richard X after Freak Like Me came out. Everyone suddenly wanted to work with him because he was making pop music that didn’t fall into the usual cheesy territory. That whole Goldfrapp-lite aesthetic was huge back then, right?
Everything Xenomania and Richard X were producing sounded completely different from what the mainstream pop acts like Britney, Christina, *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, and Beyoncé were doing at the time.

Nothing Good About This Goodbye is amazing. I think I prefer So Good though. #10 my arse :oi:

It really is a great album, though if I had to listen to one it would be the Vallance once (I know)

The demo version of Nothing Good About This Goodbye was much better, with broody synths that give the whole thing an air of unease that matches her blank, resigned, defeated delivery perfectly, rather than the jauntier version that ended up on the album:

I can imagine Rachel on both of those. Glad that Catch You ended up with Sophie though, I expect Rachel's version would have been more polite.

I've only listened to the first episode of the podcast so far but it is clearly a labour of love.

The deep dive podcast is really good. I’m midway through the second episode

I finished all 3 parts and I really enjoyed the journey with this album.
