I'm off to Australia on New Year's Day, 5 nights in Melbourne and 5 in Sydney. Please don't say it's too short a time for such a long journey like everyone else in my life has 🥴

Do you have any TIPS for either place? I spent a few months in Sydney around the release of Blackout and Headlines (Friendship Never Ends) but have never been to Melbourne. Thinking of booking a day trip to the Great Ocean Road, is that a good idea?

Any THOUGHTS WELCOME apart from ones about the length of trip

Great Ocean Road is GREAT. Are you hiring a car and driving it yourself? Only way to do it really. I did it between Adelaide and Melbourne and yes it took more than a day, but as you're limited, just take a car as far as it'll take you, relax and enjoy it. Stunning and incredibly geologically interesting to see.

Thanks though! I will book the trip solely based on your recommendation

Federation Square, Hosier Lane, Fitzroy, Naked for Satan, Southbank, Prahran Market, Flinders St Station, Royal Botanical Gardens, Shrine of Remembrance, Queen Victoria Markets, Docklands, 35 City Circle tram, China Town, State of Grace, St Kilda, Brunswick, Chin Chin.

Melbourne - Pride of Our Footscray, ACMI museum, Murmur Piano Bar, Westfield Southland (or Westfield Fountain Gate) for Kath and Kim pilgrimages, Nunawading Studios (it's closed, but you can still see the famous Wentworth detention centre facade), and Pin Oak Court (Ramsay Street).

Sydney - The Imperial Erskineville (Priscilla Queen of the Desert experience), The Oxford Hotel, and Stonewall Hotel(drag shows).

I actually think it's far too long to spend in both places. Have a night there in a hotel near the airport and then get straight back on the plane

Days out, gay stuff, culture... Or some "must do" touristy things. I've got some stuff planned out but open to suggestion if there's anything less obvious that's worth doing/seeing!

We did the drive from Gravelaide to Melbs, it felt like the best part of our trip tbh. We stayed in some arse end of nowhere place on the way. Full on MEAT RAFFLE CORKS ON HATS OPENLY RACIST BUT IN A CHARMING WAY kind of straya.

Good thing is most of this you could hit off in one or two days the city being super easy to get around with the trams and relatively compact.

Chuck on a Great Ocean Road day and perhaps a day trip to the Mornington Peninsula or day wine tasting in the Yarra Valley, which I’m fairly sure there is plenty of options for organised tours if you’re not driving, and that leaves a day or two to explore some other more specific places that interest you.

Gay stuff I think Sircuit seems to be a fun night for gays of around our age these days (if it’s still called that?). No idea of the Peel and Poof Doof still run, or DTs is still a cool cocktail vibe, but a google should figure that out - there wasn’t ridiculous amounts of gay bars when I left a decade ago so it’s reasonably easy to tick a good amount of them off.
