Does Eastenders usually beat the other two soaps on Christmas day? I guess people do just put BBC1 on and leave it on.

Yes, last year it beat Coronation St by nearly 2m.

It's hard to deny the general point of declining ratings, but surely coming after the success of Gavin and Stacey & Wallace and Gromit last year, I can't help but think part of the problem is a complete lack of imagination by both BBC and ITV when it comes to TV scheduling. And if Celebrity Traitors didn't prove the appeal of linear TV, then what does?

I didn't watch a single thing on Christmas Day, but spent 3 hours on iPlayer yesterday watching stuff that had aired on Christmas Day.

Obvs there's nothing on from Christmas Day that will get what Morecambe and Wise did, but yeah last year did (twice over, albeit not just on the day itself)

I didn't watch a single thing as broadcast over 24-26 December. I did watch Amandaland on the day of broadcast so that would be included in the overnights at least. Using overnight viewing data to attempt to prove your point renders it immediately invalid.

I'll be posting the chart for Christmas week later (BARB only published it today on their website), but this is quite interesting - YouTube has now overtaken the BBC in terms of monthly audience reach.



Barb’s figures, published on its website, showed that YouTube had a reach of 51.9M viewers in December, more than a million ahead of the BBC’s equivalent figure of 50.8M. Barb’s audience reach figure measures the number of people who watched a television service for at least three consecutive minutes in a month across TV sets, smartphones, tablets, and personal computers.

But then Corrie and Emmerdale have been cutting costs - they're both losing an episode in the upcoming schedule changes which come into effect in a few weeks, plus you can see the cutbacks on screen with the reduction in the number of extras. The Rovers rarely looks full these days, and if a pub in real life had so few customers, it would be going out of business! I'm not a regular EastEnders viewer but I'm impressed by how many extras they still have in the pub and in the market - it seems business as usual there.

And I'm not sure if soap actors get paid as much as we would think - the big stars certainly do, but I remember not long ago the guy who plays Kirk in Corrie (dead wood who should have been axed years ago) posted on Instagram when he bought a new car - nothing flash at all, something like a Kia Sportage - and someone said in the comments "surely you can afford something better than that!" and he replied that they don't get paid as much as we think. Maybe he was just brushing off a cheeky comment, but I wouldn't like to think he was getting paid huge amounts when he gets away with doing basically a few scenes a week.

Watching Corrie tonight it looks like they do have a fair few extras floating about in The Rovers and in the factory. Is this something they have just reintroduced as I’ll admit I don’t really pay all that much attention usually.
