My Top 500 Songs (complete!!)

Presenting my 500 songs of all time! Based entirely on play counts over the last twenty years. I have added up all remixes and alternative versions and brought them all together.

I doubt there will be a great deal of commentary, because 500 songs is too much, but I'm HAPPY TO CHAT. Expect plenty of VERY FAMILIAR POP AND DANCE TRACKS. The top 100 is basically a who's who of 90s dance, so that's fun. I doubt much will surprise, but TRY TO INDULGE ME.

To be very clear I love every one of these, whether at 500 or 1.

So much better than Cry For You (although it has achieved some degree of legacy). I know there's some debate about WHICH VERSION is better. Don't ask me, I'm not a scientist.

Stunning. Absolute peak R DI for me. Absolute disco sensation. I don't feel especially qualified to discuss it, much in the way Soldi wasn't qualified to do a Kate Bush countdown.

491 The Knife - Heartbeats (2002)

With vocals from Karin Dreijer, who also sang What Else Is There by Röyksopp, so they have excellent pedigree. I have mixed feelings about the Jose Gonzalez cover, which made this famous and probably gave The Knife a lifetime of paid bills. It was all a bit Calum Scott (evil) but slightly better.

This, the original, is of course a dripping electronic masterpiece.

So far, The Knife are one of my top electronica acts (I have the Silent Shout album on limited edition purple vinyl), Jessie is from her most UNDENIABLE album which is all bangers from start to end, & the Gabrielle song is the point when I stopped bothering with her as I thought it so PAINFULLY DULL.

I'll try give the stuff I don't know a listen later.

490 Tears For Fears - Mad World (1981)

Current darlings of 80s nostalgia along with Fleetwood Mac, Tiffany and The Police. Another with a famous dreary cover (Christmas no.1 no less, and not a penny richer eh Gary Jules?). This chunk of 80s electronica is glorious. Check out the video for some of the shittest dancing of all time.

The Bulgarian Eurovision entry for 2016. What a fucking bop!

486 Anastacia - Left Outside Alone (2004)

I'm not sure I care for anything else by my third favourite Russian royal (come through Catherine The Great!), but this really was wonderful. Hits all those daddy issue spots. Really it's the aria at the start that draws me in and then keeps me there for the big emotional explosion.

485 Narcotic Thrust - I Like It (2004)

A sleek Clubland adjacent splash from the mid 00s as the genre was dying off. About absolutely nothing except wanting to dance and fuck.

That's probably the most tolerable ANASTACIA single but as I've mentioned before I DESPISE her voice.

484 Sugababes - Too Lost In You (2003)

I was very excited to see the girls at Mighty Hoopla a few years ago. I was up in the wheelchair section, due to a foot injury, and caused quite an outbreak of knowing smiles when I very loudly squealed during the intro "oh my god I love this one".

I stand by my hysteria, it's a lush ballad, inappropriately used in contentious film Love Actually.

Anyway the video is the best use of Stansted Airport ever. Only recently discovered it's a cover of a French song by Patricia Kass AND it was produced by Rob Dougan of Clubbed to Death fame.

483 Mans Zelmerlow - Cara Mia (2007)

Deep from the Melodifestivalen archives, a full eight years before he won with the frankly rubbish Heroes (ooh a creepy boy with a balloon - who cares?) Mans dropped this glossy campy schlager-fest and promptly lost to some absolute rot.

Obviously he's way past his best these days, with his Barrett Home, fake lawn and general grizzled nature, but what a lovely clean cut young gent he was

Where is she? Why won't she do Eurovision? I've never quite got into her, but I did enjoy parts of the parent album. I will be primed and ready when she blesses us with new material.

479 Nicole Saboune - Win This Life (2014)

More pop from Sweden, although this is far from typical. Melancholic, daubed with sparse electronica, matched with low detached vocals. I entered this for ASFM and it flopped in at about #26, back when that was a thing. Shame on you Moopy.

478 Kate Bush - Hounds of Love (1985)

The first, but certainly not the last appearance (it's a very long wait until the highest) from the Queen of Less is More. I'm such a fairweather fan of Kate, I know her stuff, but rarely do any deep dives. The mother album is of course one of the all time greats. Again, not at all qualified to speak about Kate at great length.

Always surprised Rina didn't take off more. I belatedly became obsessed with This Hell.

Hounds of Love really is something - those heart-stabbing strings and loud 80s drums are a sonic standout that's never been matched frankly. Hearing her belt this out live was a marvel.

Huge regret, not begging, stealing or borrowing to go and see her. Particularly as she probably won't even pop to the shops again, let alone perform again.
