Oh a playcounts list should pop up some SURPRISES then. I wouldn't know how to do that list but if I did I'm sure it would feature lots of dance tracks I haven't even listened to in years. Some songs age better than others, etc.

I've used Last.fm (mine goes back twenty years). I've had a lot of downtime the last few months, so brought together all remixes and various versions. Overall it's pretty representative list.

Yeah the dance music absolutely dominates the top 100, because I just pop it on, on the bus or in the shower. It's like default Ag music mode.
 
477 Johnny Cash - Hurt (2003)

An absolutely legendary cover of the Nine Inch Nails track. I'm no Cash fan or even a country fan, but this is just too powerful to ignore. What a thing to do - singing about regret and failure in your dying months. Everyone and everything in the video is gone. Both Cash and his wife were dead within months of it being made and the house later destroyed by fire, giving an added layer of poignancy.

If you don't know it, give it a shot, it even has a key change :disco:

 
476 Scooter - The Logical Song (2002)

By sharp contrast... :D

This isn't even one I'm ashamed of! I pop it on occasionally. I guess it's a mix of good memories and good shameless fun. The lead singer, like Michelle Visage, is a huge anglophile stating he "always liked the dignified English way of life". And you can tell with his astonishing lyrics. I will always claim that Siberia is the place to be :disco:

 
475 Tina Moore - Never Gonna Let You Go (1997)

The first of the 90s dance fodder to appear. More forward looking than many of the other dance tracks of the time. Garage was just beginning to make a splash at the time, and this was feasibly the first top 10 hit of the genre.

Some might say the most annoying intro to a song, I challenge that. Do leave the original soulful version to Funky and try her flop follow up Nobody Better.

 
474 Steps - No More Tears On the Dancefloor (2018)

Their first appearance. One of their many covers, dipping in their hands into what I presume is from the pool of Swedish pop scraps. Never a single, which honestly is just HOMOPHOBIC.

Tina Moore - the intro is horrid but I like the rest of the song. It definitely would have fitted in more a few years later with the Artful Dodger & co. The other, lesser remembered, garage hit from the time was this one. I do wonder if it was a tribute to everyone's favourite lazy-eyed soul diva.

I'm pretty sure I've not played Gabriel enough for it to appear. For that I should be whipped, because it's an early master of the genre.
 
473 Kim Appleby - Don't Worry (1990)

One for Queens of a certain vintage. BACK WHEN POP WAS POP AND NOT ALL THIS MODERN RUBBISH.

Having lost her sister to cancer (I think), she went solo. This was a big old no.2 hit, while G.L.A.D got to no.10, her career slipped away pretty fast after that. She still pops up as a talking head now and again. Expect to see her again with her sister in the list.

Tina Moore had such potential. NGLYG was a huge presence at the time. Love the very mid 90s fashions.

Kim. She did make other good stuff, but a shame it ended quite quickly. Don't Worry needs a bit more emphatic production, but is still a unequivocal classic. I also think E-Rotic rips it off with Don't Have Sex With Your Ex, but I could be alone on that.

I grew up on his music so he was practically family

The somewhat dodgy lyrics are story telling before anyone tells you otherwise.

Swedish Max Martin style pop by numbers. I remember seeing her mime the shit out of this at London Pride 2000. I believe she announced that she was midweek number one and that we should go out and buy it to support the track. Quite the lost cause really (I certainly never made it to a record shop :)) and Eminem took the crown. Sad!

 
Samantha Mumba reminds me of doing work experience at a café the week it was released. It's not just the memories though, it stands out still as one of the best pop songs of its time.
 
467 Olivia Newton John - Xanadu (1980)

Number 1 just a few weeks before I was born, I always had a degree of appreciation for both ONJ and this top tier nonsense. Then when she sadly passed, I discovered the video, and everything changed forever. Friends worry when I drink I'm gonna pop the video on the TV, it's got that bad. I do not intend to watch the film.

This is one of those songs that stays lodged in my brain. I can remember buying the single, where I was when I saw the video the first time, dancing to the remix at the club.
 
462 Black - Wonderful Life (1987)

Where to start on this depressive masterpiece? It doesn't take more than a half wit to realise that the title is a weak disguise for the loneliness expressed within. Lyrically the song certainly hits home after a terrible year for my mental health, where loneliness despite my half decent circumstances became central to my being. It is of course, absolutely beautiful.

I believe there was an Almighty mix for both this and Always Come Back To Your Love. Neither of which are on Spotify.

It was a hit in the US right?
 
461 When In Rome - The Promise (1988)

British synthpop group When In Rome, came late in the game, scoring a US #11 hit. Only managed #58 in the UK and is virtually unknown here. Perhaps we had our fill with New Order and the Pet Shop Boys at the time. Fragile, earnest, yearning - all big ticks for me.

Sadly ACBTYL didn’t get an official release here that I know of and didn’t chart
