Currently watching Possession (1981) at long last. It's delivering everything I thought it would so far.
 
Well that was insane. It didn't disappoint; images from this film simply will never disappear.

I give it an A.
 
The Sound of Music (1965).

What is it you cunt can't face? A bit long, sure, but it's just got better over time. Would have loved a number for The Baroness.

Arrival (2016)

A good exploration of extraterrestrial communication anchored by Amy Adams. I chiefly watched it as I have read for years now that she was ROBBED of an Oscar nomination. She was indeed excellent, the whole film hinges on her performance being convincing.
 
Weapons

Not really a huge horror fan but this was enjoyable.

The bit with all the kids running after the witchy aunt through the windows looked like a lot of fun to film

Slight interval to watch The Traitors (RIP Queen Just Jude).

Auntie Mame truly is one of the best films of all time. Rosalind Russell simply wonderful in every single frame she's igniting. Now to seek out that film where she plays a nun (and its sequel). Love how the ending is essentially just shutting her up - it really could just keep going.

I give it an A+
 
Dead Man Walking (1995)

Susan Sarandon as Sister Helen Prejean (uphabit) trying to find redemption in Death Row killer Sean Penn in thought-provoking drama I'd never gotten round to watching before. OUR SUE had obviously been building up to an inevitable Oscar win for several years before this, although I think some of her earlier performances were stronger. 1995 really was a STACKED year for Best Actress, with no room for a number of equally nomination-worthy performances.
 
The Worst Person In The World (2021)

Renate Reinsve BEGUILING from start to finish in a star-making turn in charming Norwegian romance that feels like a fresh & new take on the genre. LOVED IT.
 
Rye Lane (2023)

Brixton set romcom full of brash colour with awkward David Jonsson falling for sarky livewire Vivian Oparah over the course of a day. OUR VIV got a surprise BAFTA nomination for Best Actress but otherwise this was very overlooked. Short, sweet & full of surreal detail, it reminded me strongly of old E4 show As If.

Was all set to watch this, but looked up Amy Adams' filmography as I've never actually seen her as a leading actress in anything (Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999) may be the only thing). And so, after I've finished the latest Landman episode I'm going to watch...

Evil Under The Sun (1982)

Took me long enough to watch this as Agatha Christie usually turns me OFF but oh my fucking god at this :D. Not a single fuck given to the period with the iconic fashions and the bitchy dialogue just fucking crackled. Not to mention Nicholas Clay wandering around all cheeked up and hanging out of his speedo.
 
Winter's Bone (2010)

Jennifer Lawrence searches for her deadbeat father in the chilly rural backwaters of Missouri. OUR JEN received a breakout Oscar nomination for this, but it's not just an audition for the likes of The Hunger Games, it's still perhaps the best performance of her career - she inhabits the role. This is also a very JANUARY sort of film.
 
28 Years Later (2025)

I know a (prosthetic) dick when I see one.

I want the sequels already.

I give it a B.
 
Single White Female (1992)

Another old film that I'd always known of but never seen, with Bridget Fonda dumping her useless fella & advertising for a new roommate instead. Sucks for her that it's psychopath Jennifer Jason Leigh who moves in. Worth it for the stiletto scene alone, a properly thrilling ride from the early 90s that they don't make 'em like anymore.
 
Blow Out (1981)

Wanted to check out more films by Carrie director Brian De Palma (1940-present), but couldn't track down Dressed To Kill (1980), and The Fury (1978) wouldn't play properly. But my plan was to balance out what I was expecting to be a very mean and transphobic viewing experience of DTK with a light stab-a-thon giallo-like thriller with Blow Out. Travolta is still gorgeous to look at in 1981, Nancy Allen, in a very Fassbinder-era Hanna Schygulla like turn, is low key terrific as her roll plays out and it's hard not to think of her as playing a role within a role, the aspiring make-up artist at the fringes of an industry she dreams of being a part of, being the bit on the side and then thrust into a leading part in a movie that blurs the lines between life imitating art and all that. John Lithgow is also very effective in his role. I guess to draw a parallel with Carrie is that the closing sequence is its richest and most satisfying part.

I give it a B.

One of my absolute favourites.
 
Parting Glances (1986)

Well I did enjoy this. A dignified and likeable piece. It must have been nice (for want of a better word) at the time to have a film showing a circle of friends affected by AIDS in a way that wasn't just stark and devastating as the stigma and fear must have been absolutely suffocating in a way I can't imagine. Given the era it was from, I'd say it's a really important film. Apparently Sharon Stone sings a song on this? I can't find it on YouTube (called "Obsession"). Pity she never kept it going - would have loved an I'm Not Scared out of her.

I give it a B.
 
The Three Burials Of Melquiades Estrada (2005)

Directed by & starring Tommy Lee Jones, this was part of a swathe of Westerns that came out in the mid-2000s in a mini-revival of the genre. It's the most bizarre of the bunch though, most of the time feeling more like a farce than anything else, with loads of surreal characters & odd imagery. TLJ is an interesting director with an eye for peculiar detail, but although this film might have suggested he'd be following in the footsteps of Clint Eastwood, he hasn't directed a film since 2014.

I watched this again recently and enjoyed it much more than I did 30 years ago :bruised:
 
Willow (1988)

Bit of a slog. Was on course to give it a D, but the 2 witches going at it saved it. There is some sword violence at the end, but I'd say kids might really enjoy this. Had no idea Warwick Davis had this rather impressive and consistent movie career going on all this time.

I give it a C.
 
Under the Skin (2013)

After the excitement of alien man hunter Scarlett Johansson cruising for guys in Glasgow's St. Enoch shopping centre, this just gets more and more interesting. Switching between observing and wondering what and why she's doing things to watching her observing and wondering why people are doing things. And when she does switch herself, we see her in pursuit and even still it's unexplained and open ended. I loved the accents, the feeling that the dialogue wasn't scripted (however stilted it occasionally got), and I'll bet some of it was just raw footage of Glasgow on a Saturday night.

I give it a B.
 
Minari (2020)

The trials & tribulations of an immigrant Korean family who move to rural Arkansas in the 1980s. Touching family drama anchored by strong performances all around.
 
Finally got round to watching Influencer (2022) and followed it up with the sequel, Influencers (2025). The first film was MUCH better than the second, but they were both great fun with some cracking performances.

Casino (1995)

This does feel like Scorsese going over ground already covered in Goodfellas a few years before, but it's still a reasonably compelling, if overlong & flawed, tale of Mafia crime & relationship breakdowns in the glitz of 70s Las Vegas. Top marks to Sharon Stone though, giving by far the best performance of her career.
