Doesn't have to be the country in which you live either!

So if you live in the UK but you absolutely fell in love with Auchan in France or Netto :eyes: in Germany or even.. oh I don't know... Trader Joe's in the USA then just include it. Yeah! 143!

The only rule is you must stick to five.
 
1. Whole Foods - If I had more money, I’d only shop here

2. Publix - where shopping is a pleasure

3. Walmart - cheap as fuck for non-perishable food. I don’t get produce here though

4. Trader Joe’s

5. Tesco - idk I feel like they’re iconic
 
For American ones:

1. Aldi
2. Kroger (specifically Mariano's)
3. Whole Foods
4. Trader Joe's (would be much higher if there was one closer to me cuz it's amazing).
5. Costco or Sam's Club.
 
M&S - see Whole Foods comment above

Dunnes Stores (Ireland) - great stores, beautiful stores. Nice bread and lovely artisan cheeses

7-11/Lawson/Family Mart - God I wish I could go a Japanese konbini right now

El Corte Inglés - always have to seek out their food halls when I'm in Spain or Portugal

Aldi - Much better than Lidl here nowadays

I think M&S and Sainsbury’s are my favourites but I do the majority of my shopping in Tesco, which i do like too, because it’s 5 minutes away from me.
 
I love Tesco. I do feel it's underrated.
There's a really nice big one not too far from me and I just do my ClubCard remix thing and pack it all in the trolley. Very civilised.

Lidl and Waitrose are also near but there's no way I can do a weekly shop in Waitrose and Lidl .. well.. we do I like it for bits'n'bobs and actually their fruit and veg is pretty good an their high protein stuff is good BUT the shopping experience is nearly always -3/10
 
HOWEVER, on this note I will have to add that in spite of their FABULOUS Facebook posts, Aldi is nowhere near Lidl for me. I'll always be a Lidl ride or die in this scenario.

I'd say better than Waitrose too to be honest.

Pastry-wise I really would put Lidl at the very top... then probs M&S and closely followed by Tesco - their croissants are actually fabulous.
 
STILL only ever been to 3 Lidls and they’ve all been shit, even the bakeries. Better than Morrisons but worse than Asda. Maybe it’s just those 3.
 
I’ve only been to American locations, but I don’t like Lidl or Aldi. They just don’t have the things I want and you have to pay for bags and to use a cart
 
M&S

Everything else is just convenience. Once you buy M&S you just get annoyed at everyone else’s inability to stock proper fresh and tasty food.

It used to bother me that M&S didn’t stock other brands. Ironically they do now, but I don’t think I buy any other brands when I’m in there. There’s a couple of things I won’t buy of theirs such as cereal, but otherwise, in me now.

I like the big Tesco because it sells absolutely fucking everything, and I also go to Morrisons because it’s our local. There’s a small Sainsburys express as well which is useful for what Morrisons doesn’t have.

I don’t shop anywhere else.

I used to like Wholefoods and Booths but it’s just overpriced for no reason. Waitrose isn’t bad but it’s just M&S but less good.
 
M&S - Their newer concept style stores are fabulous and I have this core memory of buying sweet peppers from there and them being the crunchiest, freshest I think I’ve ever had. Surely must have been a fluke? Well aware a lot of supermarkets use the same suppliers.

Sainsbury’s - just a good shopping experience. Wider aisles and cleaner stores.

Lidl - I live next door to one and there’s something to be said about the smaller stores making it much easier to just “pop-in”. Usually pretty clean and simple to navigate etc. Much better now they have self-service when you’re only buying a few items.

Tesco - Big box. Does what it needs to well.

Morrisons - I want to like this more as it’s also very close to me but what is it really these days? The stores look awful and unkempt and it’a not even cheap to reflect the obvious cost-cutting. Seems to constantly have stock issues.

I feel it's not quite as good as it used to be since they got rid of the misters in the veg section :(
 
WHATEVER happened to MISTERS? Our Morrisons had them for a while and then suddenly they disappeared without any reasoning.
 
I don't really have a favourite. We don't do a big shop so much as several small ones, but I have no problem with this as I enjoy food shopping.

We probably buy most from Lidl, but only because it's the nearest large supermarket. But that is topped up by pretty much all of the other chains. The only one we hardly ever use is Morrisons, just because we don't have one either particularly near to us, or near to where I work.
 
I don’t remember the details, but when I studied abroad in London, I think Waitrose had free coffee of some kind? Or am I imagining that

No, it's true. Although they scrapped it, and then brought it back.
 
15 years ago and more, Waitrose used to be supreme all around. In terms of availability of more obscure ingredients, it's still very good but the quality of M&S far exceeds it now on ALL levels

Of preprepared meals, I find theirs to be underseasoned and generally flavourless. I'd rather get a Sainsbury's ready meal than a Waitrose one.
 
Whole Foods is good albeit their High Street Kensington branch is nowhere near as nice as it used to be. They still continue to struggle in this country in spite of the Amazon ownership.
