Charli xcx - Wuthering Heights

Can't believe we're still 5 1/2 weeks away from this record. Rude.

Dying For You is a bop but I prefer almost everything else here on first play. Always Everywhere, Altars and My Reminder (!) are incredible. I can't believe she made an album like this again. the unhinged chainsaw synth-esque strings arrangements on numerous tracks... :disco:

Dying For You is a banger but it does probably feel the least removed from Brat.

Absolutely love Altars. The back end of the album is super strong.

I did wonder before the release how much would be proper songs rather than soundtrack mood music, but I agree this is a very good album.

Yeah, this is great, a massive sonic shift away from "brat", as was intimated early on by 'House' although that is the weirdest thing on the album. Such a smart move to do this on what is, in theory, a very low-stakes album and how often in the modern fuck-and-chuck music landscape do you get to make a low-stakes album? Nice one.

My Reminder is an absolute delight. right down to the way she's singing and even the production it's truly a True Romance deep cut.

Streets are saying we're having a dippy eggs and soldiers summer this year.

Sorry to Charli xcx charts but this is not actually the soundtrack, is it?

it's a soundtrack album commissioned by the director with multiple songs in the film, so...

Most of the songs aren't in the film though. It's a companion album for sure but is it the soundtrack? I don't think it qualifies.

I really like it but I don't love it. Yet. I like the sound of the album but if you're going to have such a limited sound palette, the songs need to tell and I'm not sure all of them do. But she's had a few growers in the past so we'll see. 'House' is still my favourite for the sheer what-the-fuck of it. Plus, I actually love John Cale's recitation.

Anyone who has seen the film care to comment - my understanding was that this was the soundtrack albeit with instrumental versions and themes etc.

I didn't know the album well enough going into the film to be sure but House, Chains Of Love and maybe one other are in there fully with vocals I think... a lot of the film soundtrack sounded familiar so assume that was instrumental versions of songs I recognise from the album.
