EDIT - they've been announced and it's a surprisingly COMMERCIAL year - lots of pop acts and returning favourites. As a result I only got 4 right in my predictions!

Mariah gets nominated for a third time. She has to get in now. I think Alicia Keys was the big omission this year, she was on everyone's lists. Beck's omission another surprise. There's also not a single "classic" act (pre-80s) which has to be a first.

Personally I'm really happy to see Melissa Etheridge, Jeff Buckley and Luther Vandross. Can't see them getting in however. Would have preferred De La Soul or Eric B & Rakim over Wu Tang Clan.

Really shocked to see New Edition. I guess they were one of the first New Jack acts. Other than that, it's a very appriopriate list.

Iron Maiden are one of the most influential british bands of all time, almost the equal of Black Sabbath in the metal genre.

Oh I forgot about them… they were heavily tipped this year as well. I think they’ll be nominated in the next few years. The Hall does like its pecking order (or correcting a pecking order) and there’s lots of alternative pop acts in the 80s and 90s that can’t really go in before they do. Pet Shop Boys for example.

I just read that Phil Collins is only one of 3 people to have sold more than 100m records as both a solo artist and as a group member. The other 2 are Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson. So that’s insane for it to be his first nomination.
 
In today’s landscape it does feel weird and I think the music world is kinder to Phil Collins today than it was 10 or 20 years ago. But record sales was always very low on the pecking order in criteria for the Hall.

Collins has little or no lingering influence as a solo artist. Genesis do but mainly for their braver earlier work and, in all fairness, Collins' drumming is a major part of that, equal to any one else in the band, including Peter Gabriel. It's a shame in a way that his solo success overshadowed that he was a genuinely great drummer.

I’ve been looking up train tickets (cheap!) and hotels (not so cheap - some kind of 3 day festival the following day?). £59 for a headlining solo show is much better value than the more-than-double-that for a co-headlining show with Devo who I don’t even like.

Well the pop acts missed out, but I think it's a good list this year, correcting a lot of mistakes (although Mariah remains the biggest omission for the 3rd year running)

The most British inductions in a single year ever, apparently.

In even BETTER news, both Queen Latifah and MC Lyte have been inducted for Music Influence :disco: alongside Fela Kuti, Gram Parsons and Celiz Cruz.

New Edition have the dubious honour of winning the fan vote but not getting in, which I do think was a stretch.
 
JD/NO should be fun, given the severe animosity between Peter Hook and the rest of the band. Hooky has said he's going. :eyes:
 
Only 1 of 8 inducted are female. Gosh. Pleased (and surprised) for New Order - at their best, so grim, so majestic, so propulsive, and Bernard Sumner sounding so both in awe and utterly mortified at the same time as he grapples with a voice that gives him the unfortunate burden for a singer that is not being able to sing.
 
Not being snarky but why would anyone give a fuck about being on this list?

What does it achieve?
 
It's a bit like those polls where some journalists decide what the best albums of all time are, only with a big ceremony.
 
Oof I only just noticed the lack of females. They’ve been correcting that the last few years as well.

The influence and excellence awards which I didn’t list are very female heavy.
 
I don’t think it has zero relevance at all. A lot of attention is given to the people who refuse to take part or reject it as an ‘achievement’, but they make up about 1% of indictees. Most artists use it as a useful benchmark in the way they talk about Grammy wins and so on.

Even Liam Gallagher who mocked it when they were first nominated has issued a statement saying he’s happy to be recognised and will be there on the night.

If some people don’t see the value in it or question its accuracy that’s fine. But to say it bears no relevance to the industry is misleading. Everyone who is anyone has turned up and accepted, performed and presented over the years, with very few exceptions.
