Scream 5 and 6 got very good reviews. 3 has the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score, followed by 4.
I love them all, so I don't really care, but critics seem to be less dismissive of horror these days and would probably rate 3 and 4 higher than back then.
 
Well… I don’t know what to think after that. Some real highs, undoubtedly but I feel I need to see it again immediately
 
Fuming that Im away for the weekend so have to try and avoid spoilers for the best part of a week until I can see it!

Ok do you know what, I don’t know if this is spoilers but if you’re in the thread without seeing it yet then you’ve already made some choices…

I really liked Tatum, I think there is scope for her to carry the franchise forward with Sidney in a lesser role in the way they intended for the Carpenter sisters to. And speaking of, it would be great to link the two narratives in a future sequel - Tatum and a relative of Sam or Tara becoming friends at college or something.

My biggest thing with 7 is the motive and the reveal, it needed someone pulling the strings in th background to make (yet more) disposable killers with weak motives link the past, link with the present and set us up for the future… that person wasn’t Stu (as the film itself said, it’s just too bigger ret con) that person was Gale.

It was all right there… Gale shouldn’t be the killer, but she should’ve been behind the scenes, orchestrating a new Ghostface to revive her career. She’s lost Dewey, her moral compass, the only thing she has left is her career and she’s lost it. THAT was be a Scream movie I’d be down with.
 
This was musty, fusty, tired, and dusty.

The killer and motive were a true nadir for the series and there just wasn’t enough Gail.
 
The good:
- I really liked the opening kill, it was creepy and well-directed, the best since part 2 IMO. And the house looked great, I'm glad they shot in the actual house and not a cheap looking sound stage like in 5.
- I enjoyed seeing Sidney as a mother, it's something we haven't seen before.
- The theatre kill was great, very suspenseful and gnarly.
- The panic room sequence was good.
- Gale's entrance was iconic.
- The Tori Spelling picture :disco:
- Jimmy Tatro 😍

The bad:
- Mindy and Chad served no purpose and shouldn't have been there. The actors also seemed to hate every second of being on screen.
- The film completely fell apart as soon as the interview started and the teens gathered in the tavern. Just one stupid decision after another. I don't mind suspending my disbelief occasionally, but this was even worse than 6 in that regard.
- No proper red herrings.

The ugly:
- Whoever was in charge of Gale's make-up and lighting should never work again.
This series has really done her dirty ever since the bangs in 3.
- The killer reveal. I love a good killer monologue but the identity and motivation of the killer(s) was really scraping the barrel.

Just seen it. All of this agreed!

I was really enjoying it and couldn’t believe how badly it had apparently been reviewed.

It would have been better if the killer really was Stu, because that reveal at the end and the motive was stupid. I didn’t even initially recognise the psychiatric ward guy as he had so little screen time.

But I still give it a solid 6/10 as it was a lot better than 5 and 6.

I stand corrected - the Macher house was actually a sound stage after all! It looked very convincing though, unlike the one in 5.
 
She’s in Lincoln Lawyer which I believe does quite well on Netflix
 
The good thing of having Sydney and her daughter is now the franchise can carry on with her should Neve decide to pursue other projects. Also, I enjoyed this one more than 5 and 6, mostly because sour-faced Melissa Barrera is nowhere to be seen!
 
I actually really came to like Sam by the end of six but do agree it makes more sense for the franchise to move focus to Tatum as Sid’s daughter rather than Billy’s daughter

She was shit in 5 until the final fight, but I loved her in 6. I think the fact she isn't a particularly great actress helped - the deadpan delivery and lack of expression fit the character well.
 
I thought this was fab. Everything I wanted from a Scream film and I was HOOKED throughout. Disclaimer: I don't think I've ever not loved a Scream film.

My highlights were Gale's entrance and her telling Sydney that she's lucky she "sat out" Scream 6 :D

I took a while to warm to Sydney's 30-year-old-looking daughter but by the end I was on board. The husband can go back to being dead though.

I was happy enough with the amount of Gale. Maybe more relieved that she was never in harm's way, as I'm still not over Scream 6 making me think they'd killed her.

I agree that the killers' motives weren't the strongest, but it didn't feel egregiously so for a Scream film. I was also happy that I guessed the blonde neighbour as the killer from the very off.

Scream 8 being Sydney's daughter at university/college sounds about right.

Oh and I'll stand up for Mindy and Chad. I'd no memory of them from the previous films, mind :D In fact, as someone who's not watched the original trilogy in at least 15 year and hasn't seen any of the others since they were at the cinema, the non-Matthew Lillard, non-Dewey AI cameos meant fuck all to me.

I did vaguely remember a FABULOUS MAD MOM KILLER early on, so joined the dots there and assumed it was her.
