Don’t you think that Ireland has failed to give Enya the recognition she truly deserves? Could you list the honors Enya has received in her own country, and do you believe she has gained the rightful recognition and love of her people?

I think they should've given her more recognition for her music, yes, and the Irish media exaggerate her reclusiveness, but I think most see her as a mostly normal woman who is good at what she does.
Then again she has no walk of fame-type award, like Windmill Lane Studios do (that was where she recorded the pieces An Ghaoth Ón Ghrian and early version of Miss Clare Remembers).
Also Enya was meant to have that Freedom of Donegal award last year, but I'm not sure what's happened with that.
I think she mentioned that before actually answering, but didn't mention Enya at all. I think she said them (Clannad) performing that night was what; Pól and Moya are who she's most proud of.
Then again if I knew nothing about this family I'd say it's Deirdre, Bartley, and Leon (RIP) who carried them, definitely not the Clannad siblings, and Enya does her own thing.

But true about the addicts thing, that shouldn't define them.
Otherwise we'd say Enya's a crime drama addict with all that Breaking Bad, Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire she was watching.
A good artist's creative output goes far beyond their addictions, even if those sadly led to their life being cut short.

I think (in the past few years, and more after Nicky’s passing and Moya's funeral ) the musically-attuned in Ireland are more aware of the importance of Enya's contributions; people are grateful for what she's done for the country, and worldwide, even if her music is not their go-to.

There is respect for Enya, but in the way that they leave her alone (and misunderstand her reclusiveness). I suppose there'll always be more consistent cheering on of the overtly struggling and drug-dependent, especially if they're generally nice people. I think En is comfortable (and probably relieved ) at not being overly focused on in that regard. For example, she can say drink would be her vice, without being assumed as a heavy drinker or alcoholic.
Some want to open up about life events that have a kind of scandalous feel to them. I suppose in Moya Brennan's case, it helped her to be open about her issues (as described in the autobiography, then after 2016 with the IPF diagnosis, being aware that it would take her in the end ). I doubt Enya would be willing to be as open if she were in a similar situation, or even as the eldest daughter. It is down to preference and inherent personality; that goes deeper psychologically.
What doesn't get recognised as much which really ought to be, is how Enya quietly got through hard times since childhood, took back control, took breaks, and never gave up.
Not quite a prophet or national spokesperson, but more like a quiet hero of looking after one's mental health.
I found a relevant psychological term: defensive impression management.
Considering this View attachment 42374 Enya knew what being ridiculed felt like, and from a young age was fixing a mistake made in front of an audience.

There's another thing called assertive impression management. I kind of did more of this, and it's possible Enya did/does this too. Basically countering people's perceptions of her as being a quiet, reserved, innocent person aside from her talent and/or smartness. I remember making an effort to be noticed by other adults as my parents always said I was shy. Throughout most school years, I generally tried to be outgoing, chatty, sociable, yet I always had this distance. That's kind of translated into adulthood as being quite wordy/rambly online but you still knowing hardly anything about me
Going back to Enya, there's a lot of hard work behind how she's maintained herself, and being famous doesn't help. People who just let her be without question (Nicky and Roma in particular) and encouraged her to go beyond were/are also key to her success; a support network. Moya had realised that there was a lot of hard work behind Enya's success, but from such a different perspective and level of acceptance she got, she could never fully comprehend it in her lifetime.
Whilst I'm glad she never needed to expose her private life to the press, I think there are lots of people who could relate to Enya if they knew more about her childhood and early adulthood (all the time before Watermark). ♡
Haha I had to search that one up the thing is, even if she and Roma had collectively tried every drug they could obtain, they'd know how not to let it become some huge news story. Likewise with Florence Welch if such events happened at the castle.
