The Israel-Gaza war and wider Middle-East tensions (17 Viewers)

I assume the fact there's only two pages of posts about this, a frankly huge event, that most people have war fatigue.

Hegseth is giving a press conference and it is absolutely unhinged, and can be summed up as "we'll
do what we like, fuck the rules"

For me it's more war anxiety. It's similar to COVID in that I don't think this thread is a particularly useful place to put myself.

And now I've acknowledged that, I'm going to remove myself and not lurk in it.

One of the oddest things so far, is that we've not had Trump talking live to the US or the media. For someone who loves gobbing off about his achievements, he's been remarkably quiet.

I presume he's ill again. I hope so.

That's because his arse is finally about to fall off and attacking Iran was his last wish.

I am very confused by the UK's stance.

Starmer has outright said today he doesn't believe in how the "regime change" is being enacted.

But we've still given the US access to using our bases, knowing it will make them targets like Akratori has already become.

What is my simple brain missing? We're supporting them but publicly claiming we aren't?

It all feels very Starmer doesnt it.

He's probably saying what he needs to say to appear as 'independent' as he can manage without questioning the policy. On the other hand, the Irani regime and its proxies have chanted "Death to UK" and made explicit threats against the UK many times before.

The UK being America's dog is a shit place to be at times, yet utterly necessary.

It is, but that's where Starmer's approach is fucked

If he wants to keep the Americans onside, fine I hate it but I understand it. But calling Trump out today undermines that; we all know by now that man has skin the thickness of loo paper.

He's equally delusional if he thinks his speech will mean Iran overlook our offering the Americans assistance, and take us off their target list.

RJN is spot on; in trying to appease both sides we will appease nobody.

I see he has spoken now, as coherent as you'd expect. He was on about the curtains as well. Why not.

Come on, those regimes chant a lot of things a lot of the time. Imagine going to war each time one of them wagged a finger.

You must be joking. We're talking about the religious lunatics of the Irani regime. We're talking about the regime that happily ordered the murder of Jews, the regime that happily funds the world's deadliest terrorist proxies that completely wrecks other nations' sovereignty, the regime that murders its own people on a daily basis to keep itself propped up, the regime that casually helped provide Putin with weapons against Ukraine. Some of us are literally permanently exiled because of the havoc their proxies have wrought across the ME. The Irani regime has shown VERY clearly that it's more than just rhetoric - they're religious thugs. There's a difference between just chanting "I hope you all die" and chanting it while building a nuclear weapon.

Also, the whole "UK is America's bitch" narrative just oversimplifies the situation because that's the cosmetic layer to all this. The US and UK have both similar ideological AND geopolitical interests. They both stand to gain from a denuclearized Iran. The UK has TONNES of political assets in the Middle East and is no stranger to being an Irani target. The Irani regime has threatened and plotted against the UK vigorously. And make no mistake that this regime would love to see you all dead. Let's not act like Britain is just grovelling and kissing the boot of any superpower. The US is one of the few, if not the only, power that can comfortably contain/counter Iran. Of course they're going to cooperate. But I think because the UK is the 'junior' partner in this, and because Starmer himself just doesn't have any rhetorical prowess, it comes off as subservience.

Oh please, have a seat. I literally know those regimes AND their proxies, FIRST HAND. These are people I literally went to uni with in Lebanon. I know their chants by heart and know their ideology. I don’t need convincing how evil they are, I have experienced it.

That said, when the Pentagon, no less, says there is no sign that Iran was planning to attack you might as well realise you’re just eating up some Trump bullshit. It’s Iraq WMD all over again and let’s not even try to pretend it’s all to save Iranians from the evil regime. I’ll ecstatic to see the Ayatollahs gone but I’m also happy my country is not involved in the decades of instability that follow and the deaths of millions as a result.

her heartfelt condolences were actually really moving.

FIRST.
