New Ryan Murphy. The Substance (2024) meets Species (1995).

An STI beauty treatment? Looks like I have no other option but to watch.

Cast:

Evan Peters
Anthony Ramos
Jeremy Pope
Ashton Kutcher
Rebecca Hall
Isabella Rossellini

Ryan Murphy in hate-watch shocker.

First 3 episodes are now live.

Quite literally style over substance.

Everything he makes is cringe. You can tell he wanted to jump on the Substance bandwagon really badly.

Well first episode is style over and The Substance.

Of course, it made zero sense and there's no way it will keep it up.

The episode 2 contortions the woman is having after her one night stand is giving me Madonna's Me Against The Music dancing.

The variation in episode lengths is ridiculous. I get that episode 2 was released at launch, so it's 25 or thereabouts minute duration didn't matter much, but episode 4 being 35 just feels tedious given we're waiting weekly. Anyway, it's going great with lots to still unpack (we've only just been introduced to Ashton for example). As with pretty much all TV, I wish I had left it as a binge watch.

This show. Seriously. The hatching out of the giant scrotums. Isabella also starting to get more to chew on - sort of like an anti Lisle Von Rhuman if you will. 6 more episodes left.

Isabella is sensational in episode 6. The cinema scene in question, with Murphy's established penchant for mean-spirited dialogue all the whilst her Lacroix ensemble blankets over the surrounding seats, really indulges her flair for an artsy scene of wonder.

7 episodes deep and it's kept it going, I'm stunned. I think we're getting 2 episodes next week and 2 again for the finale (if so then I'm dubious about the durations a la episode 2's meagre 24 minutes).

Episode 8: 33 minutes.
Episode 9: 27 minutes.

Why even serve them as separate episodes? Anyway, watched 8 and it's still going strong.

Bless you for being the canary down the mine of this new Ryan Murphy project. Is it 10 eps in total? I'm tempted but will await your review next week.

So the already noticeably more muscular than before Evan Peters is transforming... into what? Unless they broke off filming to give him a 6 month cycle of steroids. Let's hope anyway.

They couldn't have got a better actress for the Death Becomes Her cosplay? All they needed was someone young to nail the accent. Some malicious dialogue wouldn't have gone amiss.

Episode 9(0210) can be completely skipped given it shows the launch from the POV of school kids.

Okay finale, I'd say do your worst, but this is Ryan Murphy.

I'm guessing there will be a season 2. I think they could have camped up the reactions at the ending and cut it completely off there :disco:

Overall, I enjoyed this. Ryan Murphy can't finish things off, the Death Becomes Her and Matrix throwbacks should have been more fun, and it ends on a cliff-hanger. If you're not in by episode 1, you're probably not going to seizure, have your bones crack and emerge out of a sticky sack feeling any different at any other point.

How much does this guy appear in this? It will help me determine whether it is worth watching.
