My Top 500 Songs (complete!!)

118 Ultra Nate - Automatic (2007)

The last of three appearances by Ultra Nate on the list and the most recent. I must admit I never knew the Pointer Sisters original, when I first heard this sleek, well built cover. I always hated Jump and I'm So Excited, so never explored further. I play their version more now and have discovered the erotic joy of Slow Hand.

116 The Tamperer ft. Maya - Feel It (1998)
117 Olive - You're Not Alone (1996)

Two mid late 90s dance no.1s, which couldn't be more different. I remember Feel It, a super campy, Jacksons sampling, Wizard of Oz referencing dance-pop track, hitting no.1 and feeling very pleased.

You're Not Alone is hypnotic, haunting, melancholic, introspective - never too sugary, never too savoury. Another brilliant no.1.

I’m glad you pointed out that the two songs in the same post are different. :D

Olive are a blatant descendent of the EBTG success, but this song was fucking great.

I do remember getting swept up in the novelty of the chimney song like everyone else, but I haven’t listened to it since.

Automatic should have been huge. It's the fucking tits.

Love Feel It - poor Maya really struggled in the confidence department, but an absolutely iconic package they couldn't quite keep going sadly.

Olive. Love Ruth. She reminded me of the woman from Cracker, but on a night out. Her Enigma stuff is nice too (Letter to Heaven especially). Nothing really touches You're Not Alone - a speed ballad awash with Ministry of Sound sounds, crestfallen and monumental.

Feel It is cute to You're Not Alone's gorgeous

Automatic is the slutty third sister with cum dripping down her legs

115 Cappella - Move On Baby (1994)

I have discussed The Perf many a time on here. We've all had that moment when we just need to see Kelly Ov, demonstrating her straining vocal abilities live on national television, back when 7 or 8 million would watch, to lift us from a deep depression. I'm not actually sure she's an actually terrible singer, I'm excited to let you all know.

This is an absolute 11/10 europop banger.

114 Kylie Minogue - Dancing (2017)

What an absolute blast this was, to begin her legacy era. Her pop queen mk.II era, was long over and her 10s were scattered with collaborations, jazz versions and a Christmas LP, so this was a huge relief to have back making big pop. She looks fucking amazing in the video, sexy, glittery and so animated.

113 Berri - Sunshine After the Rain (1994/95)

Camp, camp, CAMP!

An Elkie Brookes cover given an I Feel Love revamp with an irresistible happy 90s gay club remix. What could go right? Happy days when proper gay shit could make the top 5 (ok boomer).

Happily she had a very lowkey revival recently, so good for her. Shine Like A Star was a blast too.

112 Hole - Celebrity Skin (1998)

Possibly the highest song with guitars on it (I haven't checked, and it's probably untrue), and naturally it's an iconic difficult woman (and still alive... you go girl!)

Polished and thrilling, it inspired my career trajectory - hooker, waitress, model, actress. Sadly I'm now fading somewhere in Hollywood.

111 Madonna - Hung Up (2005)

The very idea that this ever happened, is still remarkable. It is quite right of course, that Madonna begged Benny and Bjorn for the sample. It was also correct that they allowed it with split royalties, due to mutual respect.

Then we heard the rumour, the snippets, the credits and finally it dropped. An effervescent rocket aimed directly at no.1 and dancefloors (gay AND straight), this really is a forever moment.

Well, with just 10 to go before I reach the top 100, which is a brilliant achievement, if I do so say so myself.

The next 10 include Dua Lipa, Faithless, ABBA and the Vengaboys.

I will likely to be on it a lot more in the next few weeks, as I'm now on Easter hols. But then if the weather is fine...

I will absolutely finish this, probably by Eurovision.

110 ABBA - Waterloo (1974)

My my!

Waterloo does suffer from being neither God tier Eurovision or God tier ABBA. Despite that it really is a lot of fun, and landmark within both the timelines of ABBA and Eurovision. It absolutely swept away the balladry and schmaltz, and announced you can do current music and win. Sadly Europe looked and said "silly costumes".

It will forever be the most notable anniversary in ABBA's career, in fact today is the 52nd anniversary of the day that changed pop music history, down in sunny Brighton.

109 Dua Lipa - New Rules (2017)

If mid 00s music were pornography, they'd be the teaser weak sauce on a premium website - a tricky wank. Thankfully plucky up and coming queen of nothing Lipa was making waves, eventually crossing the line into public awareness with this and made pop good again.

However it was the Initial Talk remix that got the biggest playcount from me. As 80s as AIDS, and just as good. It also gave us Initial Talk, as the unofficial remix became an official remix.

108 David Guetta feat Sia - Titanium (2011)

Fuck the X-Factor and candelight versions for destroying this. Pretend it's not a belter. You don't have to care for either of them, it totally slapped it's way through 2011-12.

I wonder where this is on Mary J Blige's regret list.

107 Faithless - Insomnia (1995/96)

Ultimately it's hard to argue with the fact 90s dance peaked here. Of course there are many ways to argue it, and you may come with examples aplenty, but in the UK, it's remained one of the most played 90s tracks on streaming. That's among all genres - it's up there with Nirvana and other guitar rot.

Crisp, electric, but also raw, provocative and dynamic. It's an absolute thrill ride, guaranteed to stir, before, after and during the experience they used to call ecstacy.

106 DJ Sammy - Heaven (2002)

Speaking of stirring. I recall hearing this on a pot themed trip to Amsterdam. A few months later it hit UK no.1. The complete and utter commercialisation of trance, huge and shameless. It's remarkably notable for starting the trend of trashy trance covers of big 80s ballads (hi @ButterTart) and also the dreaded candlelight version. I could pretend I think it's aged badly or I've grown out if it - I don't and I haven't, it's pure euphoric joy and pleases me everytime.

105 Royksopp - Only This Moment (2005)

The third of five appearances from the mighty Röyksopp. Their chart presence was never really felt, but their influence remains with festival and streaming favourites - M83, Caribou, Bonobo et al. This manages to look forward musically, but is emotionally nostalgic. Majestic.

103 Vengaboys - Boom Boom Boom Boom (1999)

Let's be serious a moment. I was a very young man when this came out, and it influenced my life in many ways - very much my Catcher in the Rye. Firstly I ended up in many rooms, indulging in many booms. Secondly they elevated my music collection from a bunch of dance and Britpop, to something more thoughtful, eloquent and soulful. Surprisingly their only appearance, which tells you more about me and why I need therapy.

102 ABBA - Mamma Mia (1975)

You know how it goes. You've seen the show and the film, both of which permitted ABBA a legacy bigger than most people could predict.

The track itself is such a joyous rush. But you have to wonder if another lesser act had recorded it whether it still the staple it is. Really makes you think.

101 Tony di Bart - The Real Thing (1994)

A low-key bop, an unlikely no.1, from almost a one hit wonder.

Whoever writes his Wikipedia has forever added his appearances on village fetes. So imagine my surprise to check in and find a link to this story:

BBC News - Tony Di Bart: The Real Thing singer sentenced for hitting PC - BBC News

I can imagine drunk Tony di Bart not getting the recognition he feels he deserves "I sang The Real Thing, it was a number 1, don't you know who I am"

"No"

:D This is a spectacular entry. I need whoever did this to be the official biographer for all celebrities please and thank you.

It's got to be amongst the most forgotten 90s number 1 hits but I've always liked The Real Thing. Definitely feels like it took advantage of a quiet week to top the charts whereas the likes of Corona & Alex Party missed out by being behind huge singles. I think like the Nightcrawlers, it was picked up as a remix & the original is some dreadful blue eyed soul wank.

One hopes DOOP will make a top 100 appearance :disco:

I think like the Nightcrawlers, it was picked up as a remix & the original is some dreadful blue eyed soul wank.

One hopes DOOP will make a top 100 appearance :disco:
It squeezed in between Prince and Stiltskin.

100 Rui da Silva - Touch Me (2001)

Rui da Silva now touching in the late afternoon.

The top 100 begins with this euphoric slice of progressive house. Those of us of a certain age will all have had a moment to this (well you should have done). I don't think I've ever got bored with this.

99 Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You (1994)

It is tradition that I play this just after my birthday in August every year to annoy Mr Ag. By December I'm utterly bored of it.

Good for Mariah though, this song has had quite the journey, originally stalling in the UK behind fading Xmas No.1 Stay Another Day. It may have lost the battle but it definitely won the war, finally topping the charts over 25 years later.

Now I've never seen Mariah live, nor do I especially wish to, but I hear she plays this live at any time of the year. Not even Buble is that needy. It truly is the Dancing Queen of Christmas.

98 The Original - I Luv U Baby (1995)

Stand back and admire the glory that is mid 90s commercial house. That piano rift, just a nip and a tuck away from Dreamer, and many others. To my surprise, an entirely American outfit, I'm sure they certainly paid attention to the sounds coming out of Europe at the time.

Either way, it's solid gold - a warm and comforting house banger. Do give the Dancing Divaz Remix a spin.

Fun fact the singer used to be a backing singer with Bon Jovi. A job's a job I guess.

I was recently AGOG to learn that Cassandra Fox was only 18 when she recorded those "Touch Me" vocals, when the whole appeal was her sounding like a smoke-ravaged 48 year old performing at the Hayes Working Mens Club

97 Ace of Base - All That She Wants (1992/1993)

But WHO WAS THE BABY?

Internationally beloved to this day, the most successful Swedish act of all time, with definitely no Nazis involved, this is a classic pop number one which definitely didn't appropriate reggae for white people.

Now I've got that out my system, I'll save all my praise for The Sign :disco:

I guess she just put the hours in.
