Surprised that there wasn't already a thread for this mammoth song, although it might have been lost in the ether of previous editions of moopy.

I just noticed that this song has ONE BILLION STREAMS on Spotify. This came out the same time as a slew of big songs in late 1997 - for comparison:

744m Robbie Williams - Angels
726m Aqua - Barbie Girl
185m Janet Jackson - Together Again

This has had a lot of reactions vids on YouTube lately. It’s a bit depressing to hear them saying wow my mom would play this in the car when I was little :D

I think it’s a brilliant song and I can easily listen to it daily and never get tired of it. I think they song was probably a blessing and a curse for poor Natalie since it was supremely popular but was also a cover so not sure how well she profited from it.

Here in the US, they don’t release a single so you had to buy the album which helped her hit 2 million in sales. This song was MASSIVE here and was inescapable.
 
Yes. I don't need to hear it, but equally don't deny its brilliance.
 
Actually, that's not quite fair - I don't need or choose to seek it out would be more accurate.
 
one of the those truly timeless classics that just pulls you in from the first chord. superb lyrics, gorgeously soft vocals, the warmest production. an eternal 11 chez jark.

I also rate Shiver almost as highly.
 
what's funny to me now, listening to a lot of 90s music, is how so much of it sounds at as good as, if not better than, the pop made today. in terms of the production. I think there are fewer gifted producers and mixers working today, or maybe standards have slipped.
 
There’s something quite chic about the way Nat doesn’t give in to the temptation to over sing this. The vocal is cool and classy and ultimately has a quiet reserved emotion to it, rather than giving the man the satisfaction of SCREAMING her emotions.
 
This does make me appreciate the delicacy of Natalie's take. Edyta Górniak would have done a good version retaining the original's jangly qualities as a follow up to One & One.



Imagining fake musical timelines - I need to stop this.

She simply read the lyric, which lots of people don't actually do. And then acted it in the video, which I think was a huge part of the success. As a package it was irresistible.

Yes, her background in acting doubtless helped. The video is as iconic as the song.

Love it, love her. She needs to accept that it's a show-closer though. I think it was her third song at Mighty Hoopla when I saw her, and I felt bad for her. Yes she has other hits, but once it's out of the way she's never going to get a crowd to maintain that level of interest for, say, Shiver.
 
Torn was such a 90s MOMENT. Obviously, it’s a
10 and nostalgia elevates it even further. And how iconic is the video!
 
Actually like it and her a lot more now than at the time. I’d never deliberately play it now but wouldn’t turn it off if it came on or skip. It was played in a bar I was in in Porto recently and pretty much the whole bar sang along word for word, which was kinda lovely especially as I doubt a high percentage would have been old enough to have heard it when released.
 
I was playing Come to Life last night and it really does have several of her loveliest and most commercial tracks post-Shiver - it's a shame the album was so disastrously handled. Fun in particular is such a stunner.

she's that odd kind of artist - long career, several hits overshadowed by one signature hit, small loyal fanbase, mixed bag of albums, long gaps and unfortunate choices... new timbre... but widely liked and respected I think.
 
I’m not sure what I’m watching / not watching but this song never feels overplayed or ubiquitous to me. I have it on a few different playlists and it’s a surprising joy whenever it comes on. And I agree it hasn’t aged a day, and I think i like it more now than I did then, when I probably was hearing it way too much and taking its beauty for granted.

I'm still fuming over Wild About It being shoved out as a buzz (well not really) single.
LOVE Want but surely That Day should have taught her to play it safe with the first single.
 
Yeah I agree that this song's greatest asset is how well it's aged.

Delighted you've finally come around.
 
Modern pop is incredibly anaemic. Everything sounded a lot fuller back in the day. They seemed to still be trying to do something interesting or different at least. Modern production sounds more like a cynical factory line to get a trending/ streaming hit, which is just so BLEAK. Even my faves are guilty.
 
I just popped this on and I'm upgrading it from 8 to 9. As said above, the vocal performance and production are just incredible.
