Madonna - I Feel So Free

We've settled on 'taster lead single', or are we just hedging our bets?

I think it makes a lot of sense as a taster lead single that's kind of a banner song for the project, and genuinely piques interest and attention for the album, but isn't necessarily the song on there that's most obvious as the 'hit'. I'm finding myself comparing it a bit to Scissor Sisters - Invisble Light in my mind.
I think she's at the stage in her career where a big hit is out of the question now anyway.

Is anyone else’s social feeds full of teenagers saying “who is this Madonna?”

I keep getting served random Threads posts from confused young people who were forced to watch some old woman dance with Sabrina Carpenter.

I’m not even joking now. I’ve counted 4 this weekend already.

It's shocking but time has passed. It's a shock though

I think the teens questioning who is Madonna thing is performative and not genuine. there's no way anyone 15+ doesn't know who Madonna is.

gen Zers know Like a Prayer AT LEAST, I’d wager. Hung Up has been increasingly more in the public lexicon too, here in the States these last couple years, where it was never as big. 4 Minutes too.

I imagine a lot of it is indeed ragebait BUT I'm sure that there are many, many teenagers who have no idea who a woman is who hasn't had a major hit or massive cultural moment in over 15 years.

Yah I think if you’re not following Madonna on Instagram how would you know her at 15? You will of course have heard her songs in passing but won’t attribute them to her, just songs from the 80s and 90s. Especially if your parents weren’t pop music fans. I’m pretty sure when I was 15 I could hum a song by The Supremes or the Rolling Stones, without knowing who they were.

age really isn’t as much of a factor as it was 15-25 years ago either. You have all generations of music at your fingertips these days and the nostalgic songs are constantly being playlisted or having resurgences on TikTok, etc. Madonna’s streaming numbers were historically quite poor but have come along way and comparatively better than some of her peers now (see Janet)

Based on my experience with teenagers, kids taste falls into two key categories. Those who just absorb everything new on Spotify, or those who realise modern music is rubbish and take deep dives into old music, which is easily accessible. They're most likely to go for Fleetwood Mac or Radiohead. They've probably heard of Madonna, but the sound is fairly irrelevant to young modern ears.

But then equally you have easier access to so much more. Plus 15 - 25 more years of music to discover than you did then.

That said, if you consider yourself a music fan, it does cross a line into ignorance at some point.

Spotify 1st day: 584,540

Not bad considering it missed Friday playlisting, for reasons unknown. Let’s keep it as a buzz track though.

To be fair, any teenager not that keen overall on music hasn’t lived through one of her prominent eras, so there is very much a chance they don’t know who she is.

To not have heard the name seems a bit off, but otherwise I get it.

it will likely have a bigger day next Friday with the NMF push, assuming the Sabrina song isn't out so soon. that's not bad though.

It didn't help matters that it looked like she needed a stairlift to get down those steps safely.

So foolish to not have added it to streaming the moment after its radio debut. This is starting to give Kylie at Parlophone circa 2014 messiness.

I don’t think she gets enough credit standing next to Sabrina Carpenter as someone in their 60s and still looking like a genuine pop superstar

That isn’t easy.

oh give it a rest
"Give it a rest" implies I've repeatedly made comments like that, which I haven't. Madonna is obsessed with appearing younger, and wearing flats would have assisted with that illusion. She looked extremely unstable & nervous going down those stairs in heels. That may be true at any age, but many will attribute it to her being older. Being on stage with Sabrina, also provided viewers with a youthful comparison. The irony here being that I'm not actually ageist, while Madonna herself is.

you think she should have WORN FLATS? don't make me SNORT
