My comment was a flippant one but come on we are some way from this surely.

I've only really focused on the UK charts but the album and singles from it have had way more staying power than those examples.

Both hail from the biggest boybands of their generations, became stadium-selling solo acts surpassing their original group.

Harry Styles is 10 years into his solo career, now released the first album that’s not a water cooler moment at age 32 - so he’s almost a copy paste of The Williams trajectory so far (and Robbie is still a very successful heritage act in 2026, so there’s worse roads to travel).

Ok all fair points and I dont disagree.

I still think Harry's commercial stock is higher than Robbie on those albums though, the album and American Girls are still top 20 10 weeks after release, Aperture had a similar run, and would still be charting were it not for Sign Of The Times having a Hail Mary related renaissance. Ready Steady Go has also only just dipped out of top 75 on it's 10th week. And this is all before the stadium shows that will surely boost streams more.

I think the claims of this album bombing are slightly exaggerated that's all.

Just realised Intensive Care did way better than I'd remembered so perhaps not a totally unfair comparison. Of course a lot of those album sales in 2006 would have been unwanted christmas gifts, I don't remember the singles having much staying power.

Exactly - it was a hit by pretty much any measure, except by comparison to what he did before.

And I think the comparison may go on to flatter Intensive Care somewhat, but I do very much see the reference.
 
What are his options in terms of getting any kind of momentum back - big movie theme tune - like a Bond theme or similar or is that already beyond his reach? He could do some colabs - those can be cranked out - he could do a bit more acting or maybe a Lily Allen stylee artsy residency somewhere?
 
It's not as if he's quite in the dumper yet, but one more big crowd-pleasing single, a la As It Was, and he'd be properly massive again.

Easier said than done of course!
 
I was in some of the numerous charity shops in town earlier and the CD sections are stuffed to the gunnels with Robbie Williams albums. 3 CDs for £1. They also had Messy Little Raindrops. Everything else was The Soldiers or Russell Watson or Vera Lynn.
 
I'd completely forgotten about Intensive Care. None of the single titles are familiar but I remember the album cover. All his previous album covers are so aggressively 90s/early 00s.
 
Wembley shows begin tonight and on a quick glance there are SO many tickets available for tonight alone. Hundreds upon hundreds, albeit mostly ones up for resale so the money has been made.

Team Styles really knew what they were doing in putting these shows up for sale when they did, pre-album :D

Let's see if instagram will do its thing and FOMO will shift the excess tickets for later nights.

the ticketing industry is truly broken. it's a fucking disgrace that nobody's doing anything about it.
 
This is from looking on Ticketmaster, so I guess it's people who bought tickets but no longer want to go?

And/or scalpers who haven't been able to sell on for an inflated price?
 
Surely these prices should scale down as the event approaches? :D The doors open in 3 hours! Sell them for £50 a hour before the doors open and you'll probably make loads of money on the bar anyway and cut your losses.

Why is @POP! not being pushed to become the world conquering smash it deserves yet? Dance No More got a slutty video which I still haven't watched and it still has less streams!
 
The album, bar a few songs, is just a marked decline from the last two. I did think American Girls had some potential but the lead single and tepid response the album got upon release just killed the momentum stone dead.

I wouldn't disagree. But how many albums do in a year? One or two at most I'd say. An artist cant do that with every album. To say this is a flop era though just doesn't stack up on the evidence.
 
It's not a flop, but it's a flop by his standards. And I agree re: it having no cultural impact, alas.
