Also at #41, Turn the Lights Off by Kato. Initially released in 2010 but went viral after being used in a scene in AppleTVs Your Friends and Neighbors.

"Lover, You Should Have Come Over" now has more streams than "Hallelujah". That's quite a development.
 
There's actually a remix / remake out on one of the big dance labels, so it'll be that.

Has it? I don’t keep up with charts any more. Obviously The Essential has way more tracks, so maybe just more hits not included on Number Ones have become more frequently streamed.

There was some viral TikTok video involving Remember The Time last week. Maybe that’s it.
 
I keep seeing adverts for a Jackson documentary, but as I don't see what there is left to say, I never pay attention to when or where it's on.

They released it on vinyl last week.

No.1 on debut in 2003, Michael Jackson compilation Number Ones is back in the Top 75 after an absence of 154 weeks (nearly three years) and the Top 10 after an absence of 863 weeks (more than 16 years) following its release on vinyl for the first time in two variants. The album is a re-entry at No. 7 (7,562 units, of which the vinyl accounts for 2,622). Its surge coincides with a 10-93 slump (2,084 sales) for 2005 compilation The Essential, which thus ends a straight 154 week run in the Top 75.

Actually, it’s not a coincidence at all – OCC chart regulations state that when a track appears on more than one compilation by an artist, said track will have its streams – whatever the source – directed to ‘the hits title with the greatest DUS for that given week’. Eighteen of the tracks on Number Ones are also on The Essential - Break Of Dawn and One More Chance are the only ones that aren’t – and their streams are usually diverted, as The Essential has greater support. Expect both albums to reverse directions next week. As the transferability of streams suggests, the overall consumption tallies for both albums are somewhat removed from reality, but for the record Number Ones has a cumulative DUS of 3,116,579, The Essential 2,129,168.

I think the singles sharts will be going very much the way of the albums - quite redundant

I just don't understand how the industry is happy with it - it must make breaking new acts so difficult compared to years ago, and then compounded only even more with the lack of TOTP or other shows where there are promo opportunities.

I can only assume that they make enough money out of all the old acts and songs to give a shit.
 
They really do need to address this. The number of current artists being denied a chart entry is now running into the dozens every week. Information that could be used as publicity which, in turn, would make the chart relevant again. Plus, a separate catalogue singles chart would actually be quite interesting! But in the main chart it just looks bad. This chart helps absolutely nobody.

Yeah it always boggles my brain with the charts these days because who thinks this is good for anyone. I mean sales are in the shitter I guess but having old songs just clogging up the charts is ridiculous.

Apex on Netflix. A great example of a song being used to magnify a key moment of a film, which in turn makes the song very popular.
 
I'd prefer a limit to the amount of weeks a song can spend on the chart, to prevent 846 weeks of Benson Boone or Ed Sheeran.

I don't see why we can't have both. Or a degree/combination of both.
 
There were similar arguments in the 80s and 90s about advertisements sending songs back into the charts, often at higher positions that their original run. Streaming just makes it happen more easily (and more 'organically' if that's the right word - no need for the label to take the risk of pressing it up).
 
I have no problem with overlooked songs of yore like Go (also great to see!) and even B&AB to a lesser degree but the Jackson songs and Lush Life that have already had long top 10 runs before should naff off to a legacy chart!
