Resigns as Labour leader. Nominations open 9 July. Any contest to be completed by the start of September.
 
Are we pre-empting a tedious leadership contest with some surprise nomination? Honestly I can't.
 
Shame. I was hoping this would end with the title being changed to add "DEAD" and a tussle as to whether to continue here or in the Zsa Zsa forum.

And don't they all get a life time annual allowance and security? Maybe that needs to be LOOKED AT in the age of the job essentially having the tenure of an apprenticeship
 
The security feels necessary, probably more so in an age of adversarial politics, but the allowance is obscene.
 
Security isn't part of the allowance, I think that is handled as required by the security services, for all politicians. I think it might be the case that Sadiq Khan has the most expensive security arrangement in the country.

I think this was introduced for Thatcher, IIRC. 11 years makes it seem a bit fairer when one of them didn't even manage 11 weeks.
 
Imagine just the relief of knowing you don't have to talk to Donald Trump for much longer.
 
We've definitely become FATIGUED with the PM job being treated like a football manager.

Whilst Sirkeir was ineffectual in many areas, there are others where he hasn't got his fair due really. I dread to think where we'd stand with Trump if we had someone either way more stubborn (Burnham) or sycophantic (Streeting).

It's also not a good sign that Labour have already failed to learn lessons from the Tories. They were destroyed as much by their in-fighting as their incompetence. The public do not like the Revolving Door. Would their council result have been as terrible if Streeting and co hadn't spent the last year briefing the press in dark alleys?
 
At least I think the Makerfield result is so emphatic it buries Streeting along with Starmer.
 
the public don't like the Revolving Door but the public also intensely hated Starmer. Labour knew they could not win another election with him so there wasn't really any choice was there? at least the door offers a glimmer of a chance of brighter days ahead (although ofc recent history tells us this is a mirage)
 
The public hated Starmer because they were told to. The left hated Starmer because he moved Labour so far to the right that David Cameron started to look like Jeremy Corbyn. Burnham needs to focus on taking the party back to the people rather than sopping to the far right.

If Burnham gives him a job at all, he's toast before he's even started. That little weasel needs to be as far away from government as is humanly possible.
