Tuesday appointed as minister for spurting

Wondered what was going on when I walked in my kitchen at half past six this morning and my fence was full of perching birds. Three magpies, two pigeons and loads of sparrows and tits and none of them were fighting or scaring the others off. They were actually lining up to drink water out of the dog bowl that I leave out for hedgehogs and squirrels. When I went back in the kitchen later they were all gone so I replenished the supply with lovely fresh tap water.

I have never seen that in all my years, normally the pigeons and magpies scare off the little birds but they were actually queueing nicely for water!

Birds have better manners that people. Put that theory to the test by laying out two packs of Pokemon cards...

Really don't want to be sat on my computer NEGOTIATING I want to be in a field frolicing.

I put a bowl of water outside yesterday for the cat to try and ensure she didn't get dehydrated and she completely ignored it. Today it's full of dirt and shitty rainwater and she's been GUZZLING it down.

"There's a nice breeze outside let's open all the windows"
"The air is hotter outside, so it'll only make the house warmer"
"Yes but there's a nice breeze"
"But it will make the house hotter"
"Yes but there's a nice breeze"

*bangs head on wall again*

Do you have a fan oven? Perhaps you could stick his head in it to demonstrate.

My (dead) dogs preference for filthy water over fresh never ceased to amaze me.

I have a sense of unease for reasons but unusually I don't really want to talk about it but it's there hovering.

The initial bowl of water was leftover rainwater, it's got two bits of stone in the bottom in case something small falls in and can't get out again, and I imagine bits of soil, grass and leaves.

Ridley used to love drinking out of ponds and puddles.

Our three cats are just laying around the house in various states of knackered. No panting or rapid breathing from what I've observed, though. I've got one of those pet cooling mats being delivered later today, after the last one stopped working so well.

They tend to eat less wet food when it's hot (thankfully, as it goes horrid so quickly anyway in the heat), but still drink very little water.

Oh yes, we have a few of those, never once used mats. Meow - no daddy.

Bad day to be in Angine De Poitrine. Those papier mache heads can't have much breathe.

My four are the same, they drink hardly any water. When I had a dog he used to always drink from muddy puddles too. :eyes:

Finally broke my 2026 dry spell. I've never seen a guy sweat so much. I assumed because he's Cypriot that it would be me looking like a drenched sponge.

I've got 2 hours to find energy before going outside again. Praying for a breeze.

I think this is the first thing you've said I've been able to more or less follow. I must be acclimatising.

Feet in cold water, blasted by a fan and supping a diet coke with ice. Somebody please come and feed me tropical fruit.

a tip that could solve both - put a little water in with their wet food? it will keep it fresh for longer and they'll get some hydration. apparently this is recommended in general because cats so often develop liver problems as a result of not drinking enough water.

The problem is they don't want wet food in the heat. So making it wetter won't help.

The only thing I have found help, and it is different from cat to cat, is having a water feeder/fountain rather than a still dish.

I had one cat that would only drink from the bathroom tap so we had to have that on at a constant trickle. Thank god Scottish water bills aren't usage based!

Driving home from work and I could feel every one of those 32 degrees so I decided I'd walk to my dentist appointment, only a ten/fifteen minute walk. Arrived at the dentist and the receptionist made me sit down and drink a cup of water before she'd book me in, I was that sweaty and disheveled. There's nothing so disgusting as sweat running down your cleavage.

I have no idea what possessed me to walk other than maybe I had mild heatstroke and my brain had shrunk a bit.

It’s still very warm. I am on a tram. I realise this makes me read like a Dickensian street urchin but so be it.
