I see ticket sales for Sunday In The Park With George have been delayed for a second time, and there's speculation that this is due to Ariana possibly pulling out.
 
Very little interest in Jesus Christ Superstar overall (or Sam Ryder in it), but Bob The Drag Queen as one of eight announced Herods has piqued my interest somewhat.

I don’t know why, but I was not expecting to enjoy Cyrano De Bergerac as much as I did tonight. I think because it’s such a familiar text, but they really knocked it out of the park with this production. It was nearly 3 hours long too, but the time just flew by!

I was hoping to go on my birthday too, which would have been Cole, but the prices were silly. As I said elsewhere, more than happy with Jinkx.
 
There’s some good deals to be had on Jinkx tickets right now!

There was one seat left in the stalls under £100 for Cole on my birthday so I nabbed it.
 
Watched a production of Nell Gwynn yesterday and was suitably impressed by all involved. This touring production is also going to Keswick and Chester if any moopers are around that way and fancy a rollicking Restoration romp.

Just saw the play Relics at the Lyric Hammersmith tonight. STUNNING. One of the best new plays I’ve seen for a long time. This really deserves a longer life than this one month run.

My report from NYC/DC:

1. The Lost Boys (Broadway)
MASSIVE JAW-DROPPING BLOCKBUSTER SPECTACULAR. It was towards the end of my trip after I'd seen a few things with rather sparse staging, so the scale of this was very welcome. The three-level set is insane, and the effects are A+++ for the most part - the less said about some action scenes in Act II the better. The music has gotten a hard time from some for sounding like Christian Rock but I happen to like that kinda thing so no issues THERE. Shoshana Bean is phenomenal. It's a bit tonally muddled and isn't a perfect show or anything but it was the best overall experience I had and I'd love to see it again. The bikes! The bridge! The flipping about all over the place!

2. Cats: The Jellicle Ball (Broadway)
10s across the board, etc. So much fun and so full of QUEER JOY. Queer Black Joy, specifically. The ballroom setting works so well, and despite hating Cats (and cats) I had a tremendous time. Really glad I saw it as I'm not sure how long it'll last or whether anything like it will be on Broadway again. Special mention to Sydney Harcourt who got everyone all hot and bothered as Rum Tum Tugger :horny: Spotted in the audience: Cynthia Erivo, who ended up taking part as a judge for a bit. Would I see it again: Yes.

3. CrazySexyCool: The TLC Musical (DC)
See TLC thread. Having the group reassembled in front of my eyes if I squinted was thrilling. The show is a bit messy in parts, but the highs were SO HIGH and it's a tryout run so no doubt it'll evolve and improve. I'd love to see it make it to Broadway. #TonyForLeftEye :disco: Ditch the Usher person's song and all (or most of) the religious stuff please. Would I see it again: Yes.

4. Well I'll Let You Go (Off-Broadway)
A play about grief. Included two of the best performances I've seen on stage in a long time, and it was great to see something that had no singing. I could tell that it was moving but unfortunately I don't really feel things so that was from afar. Would I see it again: No.

5. Ragtime (Broadway)
Objectively excellent - probably the 'best' thing I saw - but just not really my thing. It's all 1901 and lush and sweeping and I kinda zoned out here and there. Caissie Levy and Joshua Henry both wonderful though, and between this and Lost Boys I saw all the acting Tony winners so that's nice isn't it. Spotted in the audience: Bernadette Peters. Would I see it again: No.

6. Girl, Interrupted (Off-Broadway)
Yeah pretty boring. Some gorgeous music and great performances (sadly King Princess didn't do much for me) but ultimately not very engaging. It's a show you let wash over you rather than actively enjoy. But lovely songs. Would I see it again: No. Yes actually, several of the songs were worth the tedium elsewhere.

7. A Walk On The Moon (Off-Broadway)
My last slot was a Monday night and it was this or Titanique, which I think I'll see when Myra Dubois joins the West End cast. This was fine. An aggressively mediocre musical based on a film about a housewife in the late 60s getting a bit of dick on the side. Not BAD per se but instantly forgettable and I was the only one who didn't give it a standing ovation. Spotted in the audience: Todrick Hall. Would I see it again: No.

I've actually never seen it :square: But yes, I can see it transferring!
 
I was even singing Cry Little Sister in the shower this week after seeing the film for the 500th time.

If the musical doesn’t have a shoddy script where David, Michael and Star just repeat each other’s names over and over instead of actual dialogue, I’ll feel a bit let down :(

I hear it's got lots of references to the film that obviously passed me by, apart from when someone said "Death by stereo" or similar and the reaction made me think that was a direct quote.

Oh and there is a greasy sax guy who I believe is also in the film.

I saw Redcliffe at the Southwark Playhouse and really loved it + keep thinking about it. I was quietly devastated at the end but for a musical about (not a spoiler) two real-life doomed gays in the 1700s it's got plenty of joy and laughs. 80% of the songs are strong with the rest perhaps needing a bit more work to be less generic if/when this has a future life. I hope there's a full cast recording at some point.

I’d not been to the venue before and it's quite rough around the edges - the toilets felt like being in a 1970s East German prison - but the production itself was strong and didn’t feel that fringey.

I think that venue was only ever meant to be temporary. Their second newly built venue at Elephant & Castle is much nicer :D

I thought this was great. (The play not the toilets.)

I thought the actress playing the mum was particularly brilliant, but would agree some of the songs felt a bit generic.

Googled the case afterwards and discovered they'd taken some creative liberties to make the love interest a lithe young sailor and not a 60 year old landlord from London.

I've no problem with this. It's what he would have wanted!!

I agree re: the mum. She nailed yer standard comedy mum role and brought so much more to it. The song about being a closeted gay and dreading the girlfriend chat from relatives hit hard (although lyrically was one of the weaker songs for me)

Saw this today and just loved it ! Amazing vocals and the way the stage was set up I could see everyone opposite me welling up which made it even more upsetting !!
 
I too was in New York this month, but Ragtime is the only show where dUb and I overlapped. I personally LOVED every second of it. The audience were squealing (that seems to be a thing on B’way), and a mid-show standing ovation. Maybe it’s on a post-Tonys high. Would I see it again? Absolutely.

Rocky Horror Show at Studio 54. Loved. Luke Evans didn’t disappoint, he did Tim Curry proud.

Death of a Salesman. Brilliant play, brilliantly acted, brilliantly directed. Nathan Lane, Laurie Metcalf sensational. Christopher Abbot nearly matched them. Spotted in the audience: Faye Dunaway. (!!!)

Every Brilliant Thing. Okay, so I said I was not gonna give in to celebrity casting anymore, but I couldn’t miss Mariska Hargitay. She didn't disappoint.

Little Shop of Horrors. Wonderful.

Buena Vista Social Club. A joy.

Death Becomes Her. Another joy. Where has Jennifer Simard been all my life?
 
Saw this last night. Massively entertaining, in turns hilarious, emotional and thought provoking. Drag as it feels it should be, rather than what it has largely become. And dedicated to Penelope Keith ❤️

I pretty much just ignore anything at the Almeida. It’s far too hard to get tickets unless you’re an influencer or connected to the theatre. It also seems they favour the 25 and under deals and the people with Access requirements - not to mention there’s an insane amount of theatre fans these days getting disabled Access codes based on an ADHD diagnosis :bad:
 
Oh, well, it doesn’t suit me to make a trip to London then anyway. Maybe if it’s good enough it will transfer to the West End. That’s how I got to see Paul Mescal in Streetcar.
 
I regret booking The Misanthrope now. Didn’t get to see Sandra Oh yesterday, but I doubt it would have made much difference. I just hated it from the first 10 minutes and found it excruciating to sit through. I think the direction and re-writing of the characters was just dreadful. It’s hard to explain, but I switched off and failed to care about anyone almost immediately.
 
Pride month's had me queening out at the theatre with Jinkx as Judy, Redcliffe and last week PRIDE THE MUSICAL which was probably my favourite of the lot. The film's a ten for me and this is the same. Similar but more overwhelming in emotion, with a second half that doesn't let up.

Lovely to have the lyric "I like cock and Ethel Merman" on stage in a period where I've been hammering both cock AND The Ethel Merman Disco Album too. Representation!
 
Very much enjoyed 1536 this afternoon on my day off. Other than knowing it was about some women in the Tudor times, I’d read nothing about it, and I’m glad.

This ends on 1st August, but surely must have some legs beyond that. It’s too good.

August Osage County with Leslie Manville and Anna Maxwell Martin is something to look forward to, right? I wonder who else will fill out the cast.

The film is mid, but Julia and Julianne make it worth watching. I also don't know how many times I've told my partner to eat the fish (bitch), it never gets old (at least for me :D).
 
It’s been almost universal one-star reviews for Trainspotting The Musical. Apparently they’re trying to pivot in the marketing by calling it an anti-musical.

Anyway, I think I should see it just to not miss out on the car crash. I always regretted not seeing Viva Forever.
 
Saw the touring production of Legally Blonde a few weeks ago. The two male leads were the definition of milquetoast, Elle was a bit shouty but fine (she was on Love Island I believe?). There were also some sound issues in the venue, could hardly make out the lyrics at times. It's not something I need to see again. I had seen an amateur production of it years ago, which was good fun, but the naughty jokes seemed to be dialed up for this version and just fell completely flat for me, although the prosecco huns seemed to love it.

We have Heathers booked for later this year and I got a ticket for Cats next spring out of morbid curiosity.

Amber Davies is a proper trained musical theatre actress. She just happened to do Love Island when she was about 20, probably to raise her profile at the time.

I saw Legally Blonde in the West End when Carly Stenson was in the role. Enjoyed it, but not sure I’d see it again. It’s a much better screen to stage adaptation than Heathers though, which doesn’t get the tone right at all. But I suppose it’s popular with people who saw the musical before the film.
