Madonna - Confessions II OUT NOW (2 Viewers)

I’ve found very few Madonna interviews, especially since Confessions, all that interesting. This era seems to be somewhat of a return to the Madonna of old while still being a bit guarded which is to be expected.

It is quite the contrast when they are in a room together as Kylie is much more unburdened by having to be that serious and deep.

She would have done that with Orbit too depending on the project, in the times of the producer/DJ being part of the main act, and the story behind Confessions and now Confessions 2, im not bemused, i loved hearing their studio stories.

Madonna obviously.

she was much more relaxed in the presence of Stuart and if you were paying attention, he was giving tidbits about the making of the record that M (who clearly hates all discussion of making music, the process etc and would be inclined to give Graham nothing) simply wouldn't have. he also went to Paris FW with her so maybe they just enjoy HANGING OUT.

Look, it was fine, but I genuinely found Madonna quite dull, uninteresting and low energy in the interview. Clearly she is very much NOT dull, uninteresting and low energy, but a casual viewer could be forgiven for thinking otherwise based on that. I’ve already seen as much being said elsewhere.

Also, @Jark I was paying attention. I’m very much not a stan kind of fan though.

Madonna has been really gracious sharing the spotlight with some of the younger girls over the years, and I've heard they all get matching tattoos afterwards! No, wait, I think they are puncture marks...
 
Kylie should totally have channelled Rustie Lee and shoehorned a bottle of Kylie rosé into the background for that segment.

I think the amount of Stuart was also fine for that part because it’s clear this is a collaboration rather than him being just the producer and I think she’s giving him his props on that and obviously felt more comfortable with him there.

Overall I thought the show was ok. She did seem a bit stilted and extremely cautious about any reply but it was great to see her in this kind of format, it’s been a while.

I’m not really a GN fan and don’t think he was great on this - the comment about lyrics was a tad misguided, borderline rude.
 
Perhaps there are examples on youtube, but Madonna has never seemed to me like a particularly good interview - not on camera anyway - that's just not her thing, she's a creative artist and it's all in the work - but she isn't really a natural at talking about it or herself - and there are plenty of examples of people who are in the public eye due to an ability who don't especially suit having to talk about themselves in that way. But it does make me wonder why she engages with that element of promotion at all if it's not something she particularly likes doing.
 
I don't think she really gets off on reverence or idol worship so things like Kylie pulling out her treasured vinyl copy of the debut are a bit of a test for her.

probably if the BBC had been really smart they would have had another artist interview her. maybe Charli or someone M would be unguarded around, in a less formal environment like backstage at a fashion show or something. it was all just a bit... stuffy?

I did enjoy though and think she gave just enough insight to stuff like the phone call with her brother and her memories of Danceteria.
 
She's no Cher, but she could be funny-cunty in interviews during the 90s. At some point, any semblance of joy clearly went out of it for her.

I like to think that this was the final straw that broke it for her.

Yeah and I think in the past when they haven't gone with Graham's 'format' for want of a better word, it's always stilted as fuck - he does what he does brilliantly well and taking him outside of that where he's not really conducting things, but just being an amiable host isn't where you get the best of him.

Oh as IF the Kylie vinyl thing wasn't pre-approved!

And I can think of nothing worse than someone like Charli interviewing her (the performative smoking at the Paris fashion show was the most cringe thing I've seen in a while).
 
I think Graham came across at the right level of gushing unlike that weirdo who inteviewed her for that publication (was it Interview?) recently.

it depends what you want from the interview, but if the idea is to get Madonna to open up on her creative process and give insight into making music I'm 100% sure she'd go there with another artist whom she likes, but not a TV presenter. actually I think a Charli x M interview would be such a delight.

I don't get the sense that she really has any particular feelings about Kylie. on balance I don't think the bar segment worked.
 
I could not understand if her complaining about the drink Kylie brought was part of a bit or just Madonna going rogue... it didn't FEEL like a BIT

I can't imagine Kylie begged to be a part of the show and I'd be surprised if that segment was contrived by the BBC.

I find it a bit odd that you think she's ambivalent to Kylie but seemingly loves Charli. That's a very strange take. Kylie is at the stage of her career where she needs approval from no one....if anything this was just a lovely gesture on her part.

Oh fanny, at this point I'd say you're lugubrious at best :D

For me, I look at how Madame X era Madonna was when she was the sole guest on Graham's couch alongside Sir Ian McKellan who all but rolled his eyes and told her to give it a rest. Or when she promoted her movie and her 2 leading actors sat at the opposite end of the couch from her. She is much more at ease and I'm both relieved and pleased to see her this way.

I think she respects Kylie, because she knows you don't just have a multi decade career without pushing through a lot of shit. Do they hang out and eat noodles together - absolutely not.
 
It's a very weird interpretation to suggest that Madonna's intention to include Kylie in this was to either a) bring her down a peg or two; b) to humiliate her in some way or c) to show to the world just how indifferent she is to her.

If any of those things happen to be true it reflects far worse on Madonna than it does on Kylie.

Like the bastard daughter of Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. Although I think there is a little of the old hollywood about Madonna - she definitely keeps barriers even as she breaks them - you can look but you absolutely can't touch - you will learn only what she wants you to - it keeps her up in the start shining down, but I guess it doesn't make her the world's most relatable person and in an era of social media 'stars' I guess that works for some more than for others.

I think one of the reasons I'm so into what I've heard of Dancateria is because lyrically it's a little like a diary entry - there is a sense of being given access in a way one doesn't normally get...
