the speech was all the right notes on everything. job well done. brilliant touch to give it in Manchester. if anyone was thinking of mounting a challenge I think we'll hear very soon that that's off and it's a straightforward coronation.
 
SCREAMING that Scotland got an entire bank holiday two days after the match as well as extended opening hours, and England is getting FUCK ALL

 
They definitely did extensions for Japan/Korea and Brazil, I remember it well!

I also think Tuesday is going to be a mess already. I’ve had two people put leave requests in as is which I’ve had to deny as YOU ARE LITERALLY WORKING ON THE WORLD CUP.

Its law here in Iceland but in the interest of practicality and the fact that getting to see a GP here at the drop of a hat is nigh on impossible (seriously, its really not that much better than the NHS and in a country of 400,000 is quite frankly embarrassing) most employers dont question it if its a day or two now and again. Or they have an on site/work nurse who you have to call up and explain your symptoms to.
 
I couldn't care less, but am fairly new in my job and have kept my views on the World Cup ambiguous enough that I can allow myself a bottle and a half of red on Sunday night with Confessions II and have it as an excuse for doing nothing on Monday
 
I've not heard a single word about football at work, apart from one man who wanted to know what time the match was on yesterday so he could avoid the pub.
 
See that’s not even true. Most English people I know are very happy to support Scotland. It’s nice to have a small team to follow, as well.
 
I find it pretty fucking disgusting that in a world where women are beaten by their husbands 38% more when England play and lose a football match (and 26% increase even when they win) that the prime minister is actively encouraging alcoholism alongside football til 5am… genuinely think it’s one of the worst things he’s done.

on the other hand... businesses like pubs are reliant on World Cup matches and shouldn't be disallowed from showing them/therefore losing money because somebody decided to stage England's game during our night.

also, does that much cited study say anything about the impact of alcohol on those numbers? obviously the implication is a lot of domestic abusers will be drunk, but it feels like a leap to say Sir Keir is responsible for doing something disgusting here.
 
A bigger leap is saying that pubs are ‘reliant’ on an event that happens once every 4 years. Being able to open for that one night is going to make or break their business is it?

To suggest that the increase in domestic violence isn’t in some way connected to an increase in alcohol intake alongside the football is being purposely obtuse.
 
There is 100% a link between football, alcohol consumption and domestic violence.

Saying that opening pubs for the football is causing that is skirting around the root of the issue.

If those pubs were closed, would a bunch of abusive men suddenly decide to have an early night, or would they just sink 8 cans at home?

Tackling this isn't as simple as saying you can't drink in a pub.
 
And also, yes, being able to open for special events really could be the difference in make or break for pubs and bars, they’re dropping like flies.
 
Gen Z aren't drinking and the people who are don't have as much money as they used to have to drink. The industry is absolutely reliant on events; a 'bad' Christmas would put most of them out of the game. That said, they should have to deal with the drop in demand the same way as everyone else but because it's an older Boomer/Gen X audience who want the industry saved, politicians feel they need to respond.
 
Interestingly the only pubs in my local area that were open were the micropub type craft bars; small businesses with independent management. I went to one and there were families there at 4am. It was excellent. They need the business and we were happy to give it to them.

All the chain-boozers nearby didn't open for the match.

Its way more complex than just a drop in demand, although that really is a big part. Business rates, energy costs, NI/Minimum wage pressures, the stranglehold macro breweries have on the supply chain, the insane cost of sports providers like Sky etc. They're all huge pressures on landlords and pubs and indeed hospitality in general.

That's fair although things like energy costs and wages affact everyone. There's little anyone can do when a generation nopes out of what you're selling but everyone is squeezing the same people and eventually, they'll start to burst.

This makes perfect sense. Can you imagine the NIGHTMARE for a chain pub manager navigating the 32-stage corporate approval process to pay a little overtime
