Forget sales (a useless barometer when comparing to years past) - just in terms of cultural impact, where does Confessions II sit for you based on the build up, promo and launch week?
 
The amount of effort behind this is analogous to the original COADF. So far. But let’s see. It’s still too early to tell.
 
As of now I’m saying Hard Candy, as she was still riding a lot of momentum then. But I agree in 6 months it could edge higher
 
I think Hard Candy felt big-ish mostly because of 4 Minutes and residual goodwill. but I don't think there was a lot of organic excitement around it. I say biggest since COADF if we're talking about the level of attention she's receiving and how much of it is positive.
 
Hardly Candy (intentional) had mostly mixed reviews from critics and it was a commercial disappointment in relative terms (but by then she had jumped ship from Warner and had just scored the biggest tour of all time by a woman so she probably didn't care much). The public tide was also turning against her not just because of the quality of the music but she also had a lot of (unfairly) negative press off the back of the adoption and the divorce. It probably would've all still been forgotten by the public outside the hardcore fanbase, but by the time she came back with MDNA in a post-Lady Gaga pop landscape, the die was then truly cast..
 
It is being recognised artistically in a way that has it being saddled with COAD for convenience and soundbite sake, but that doesn't do it a disservice at all even if I regard its achievements as being closer to Ray of Light in its insistence on capturing genuine moments with each song and how these songs all intensify and pursue genuine dance, extravagance and evocation. HC left skidmarks on the charts, but quickly became a mere souvenir of a much bigger tour that I didn't care for anyway.

If we're talking general public, this isn't coming near even the mainstream crossover appeal of 4 Minutes

Whilst I agree no singular track is close to 4M, this is an entirely different landscape and campaign and to reduce its reach to only resonate with internet gays is not accurate.
Gen X females are also on board and we also have some new Gen Zers. This is reflected in the streaming numbers so far.

So no, sorry I don't buy the reductive 'internet gays' thing.

I agree. you can't say it doesn't have a hit like 4 Minutes so it's not reaching that level of impact because the ways in which success and cultural impact are measured are totally different today.

This doesn't have the cultural impact of COME JOIN THE PARTEE, YEH. Now that was a moment.
 
At the risk of being seen as an infidel - I did own Music at one point, this is the most digital tracks I have by her from ANY album, except, surprisingly to me, True Blue. So, for me, this is one of her most effective eras. So that makes it her most impactful era for me in 40 years. There you go. AND THATS FACTS. Yeah. It's been a long day and I am drinking inadvisable amounts of sake really fast.

Well for an other comparison, I don’t think any of the songs yet have hit through as big as Padam did, but I do think the album has already surpassed Tension in terms of cultural impact.

This was also the time when people and the media started to be really vicious about the way she looked and dressed and her body in general. She was suddenly "too muscular" or had bingo wings, was too haggard, went too far with her plastic surgery, mutton dressed as lamb etc.
 
Oh, absolutely. I remember the paparazzi close ups of the veins on her hands and the media reports of her face "looking like a skeleton" as a result of ageing and hard training. No wonder she started using cosmetic procedures extensively right after, but then she was severely criticized for that, too. She really couldn't win either way.
