What does deletion achieve that a permanent ban doesn’t, other than annoying the remaining users?
 
I never understood the "delete me!" impulse anyway. what, so you want to leave THAT bad? but you don't trust yourself not to pop in tomorrow?

SO MAYBE ACTUALLY YOU DON'T WANT TO LEAVE AFTER ALL AND JUST WANT TO POP OFF AND HAVE A MOMENT?

But what difference does it make? The posts are still there. The same thing can be achieved by “change my password”. Reset my account, basically. That and a ban and you’re done unless you actively reseek a comeback.

The whole “delete me” thing is mostly someone throwing their toys out of the pram and mostly (not always, but definitely mostly) regretted later on.

The current policy is just silly. Refuse account deletion In the T&Cs, offer the alternative.
 
As someone who was deleted and came back, I did it as a last resort. Having been a member of this community since I was 19, I know I can't just not post. Credit to those who can. I had to have my account deleted, it was absolutely essential.

I'm also aware I couldn't stay away despite my best intentions. Someone even messaged me screenshots of the conversation about me - total catnip. It was all inevitable, and I probably shouldn't have deleted my account. But I'm glad I'm not attached to that account any more, it felt like a clean break. I've had a better time here since then.

Everyone has their reasons, it's a bit shit for everyone else, but we all move on.
 
This post is to confirm that I will never ask for my account to be deleted under any circumstances. Please ignore any attempt I make to revoke this.

No.

Xenforo is weird about deletion. Decent software would allow that, but also, would allow users to delete their own account and recover it within a period of time without any intervention from admin, as is the social media standard. It's weirdly backward still as software goes.
 
I just fundamentally struggle with denying someone the ability to delete their account (and their posts) if they choose. Or thinking that the rest of us have some kind of entitlement to those posts that trump them.
 
Deleting posts would cause an almighty fuck up if it was someone who posted a lot. So many threads would make no sense.

It also doesn’t remove posts from people who have quoted you do the idea that you are scraped from memory is futile.

I think if you post in a public space that you don’t own then you do it at your own risk. It’s not like Facebook - it’s a shared community space, not a profile page. You reserve the right to delete individual posts and you can do it yourself.

A permanent ban makes sense - as has been said, it keeps the person out without affecting the forum. If they want to come back they can, and they usually do.
 
Not Tree defending the dignity of departed accounts from the PERVERSIONS of Moopy who want to keep them animated so they can dig through their things.

should a poster be able to request a delete, come back with a new profile (without announcing who they are), then ask for that to be deleted too?

what's actually the problem with a two-week cooling-off period on a delete request? if you don't change your mind it'll be gone. the thing is almost everyone who requests the delete DOES end coming back.
 
The thing is, it's not really 'deleting' anything is it? All the posts stay, all you lose is the ability to log into that account.

(And I bet it's not impossible to actually go into the SQL and undo that if you really were inclined. The username isn't deleted, it'll just be a boolean field called isdeleted or something.)
 
Let's have a purgatory forum where all the banned and deleted people can go and chat amongst themselves.
 
i think it's all a bit moot given that like big ron said a delete is just a forever log-out and you can't remove your posts anyway.
 
I'm not a fan of deleting users (for reasons stated) but often it's not quite as easy as it sounds when engaging in that conversation.

I always try and give people a bit of a think to change their mind.

But usually anyone requesting deletion is doing so because they are upset, angry, or even in some situations worried (because of e.g. about being traced for some reason). People in that situation get angry, throw legal threats at you and can be abusive. I don't like deleting accounts, but sometimes there is no alternative.
 
This is genuinely the worst debate I've ever seen on Moopy. Honestly who cares? Mind your own business and get on with your own shit.

In all serious though, I strongly advocate for anti-flouncing measures.
 
Actually given walkouts usually generate a lot of wild speculation and discussion like this, I would argue that they are healthy for Moopy "posting up" stats
