Smoking

God I do miss a menthol on a chilly fall evening with Lana singing through my headphones

It’s been YEARS for me

I've ever smoked nor vaped and don't really see myself doing so, but honestly many of the smokers I've known since childhood were/are decent people, some of the most interesting people to chat to. 💛 Constant secondhand smoke is a minor worry; one of the neighbours smokes some really strong cannabis and it's annoying when the smell goes into our house 🙃 but otherwise I've no real issue with whatever you need to puff to feel good. It only really becomes concern for the smoker's health if it causes a chronic hacking cough or terminal lung condition 💭 (or if you quit too abruptly and get bad withdrawal symptoms).

I've tried with vapes, I really have, but I just can't. I only smoke now when I've had a drink, better than full-time but I hope to eventually knock that on the head too. Might never happen though.

This was me for years. Exactly so. And then I made one slight change which meant that it just petered out. I literally forced myself to stop buying/taking cigs out when I was going drinking and instead, only buying them when I REALLY wanted one. I realised that was usually when I was absolutely hammered and so I ended up with literally 20-30 packs of fags with 1-3 out of them in a drawer. I suddenly realised I hadn't touched one for three months without trying. It moved to buying a vape for about 3 months instead but that didn't do anything for me and that was it.

Entirely accidental, but haven't been near one for 4 years now as a result. And my drinking habits certainly haven't changed :D

I'm trying to get used to the vape because I honestly can't afford cigs and I've drifted worryingly into chain smoker territory due to stress so I needed to cut down.

My only issue with a vape is that they're not strong enough and 'cigarette' flavour juice tastes bollock all like cigarettes.

I do find the flavour goes quite quickly depending on the brand.

You dont HAVE to transition from cigs to vape. I did the Champix and the gum and the patches and ultimately found that the patches worked for me (although I was told to double each time period per stage). Im glad I never tried the vape route as Im sure I'd still be using that rather than being a righteous non-smoker

I've found a good vape shop in Rugby and he's recommended a brand which I've been trying the last couple of days and really holds the flavour. It's just that I miss that delicious cigarette taste and berry blast grape and mango just doesn't scratch the itch.

So those who vape tend to have a couple of cheeky cigs when out drinking? I have heard that from so many people. I wonder why people tend to look for a cigarette when under the influence? Is it just poor choices clouded by alcohol?

It's because a cigarette is the best possible serving suggestion to pair with any alcohol. It's why I know I could never fully quit smoking; the second I've got a drink in my hand I'm lighting up.

Ok this is me. For me I put it down to association - I'm drinking and see someone smoking - irresistible. That said I can drink for a whole night and only vape.

Re: vapes. My transition from smoking to vaping was stop start, and probably at least ten years in the making. In that time I've smoked nothing, gone back to smoking, but mostly just vaped.

I don't think I've bought tobacco since before lockdown. I'm quite a content vaper, so long as I have access to it. I'm on a very low strength. Mr Ag's is so high it makes me choke.

Dopamine, alcohol and nicotine both trigger releases and the brain seeks dopamine reward. Same reason I never really think about coke but if someone whips a bag out and I’m pissed it will seem like the best idea ever.

I have decided to stop smoking weed when I drink. It doesn't happen often, but I can become quite unpleasant apparently. I'm normally a very happy useless drinker, so I don't care for that element to come out.

Weed then booze seems to be better than booze then weed, weirdly. My only really whitey was from doing a bong after no sleep, a day of guinness and then a bong.

the end of this month will mark a year since I last smoked weed :o I haven't given it a second thought in that time. bye bitch!

Tbh weed is one of the things i’m most oddly conservative about. At a base level - the smell is completely and utterly fucking bogging. Beyond that - I think hearing about my dad’s experience as a community mental health nurse and the extent to which heavy use of cannabis was a factor in people’s mental deterioration … it made me kind of resent the portrayal of weed as generally harmless.

Even I don’t want to see cannabis legalised in a commercial free for all. The US dispensary model would be a disaster for the UK.

Legalise small homegrowing, allow harm reduction based non profit social clubs, keep medically supervised prescribing.
