The White Lotus (HBO not so Limited Series)

I don't think it will matter in the long term but I was quite looking forward to her in it

Jennifer Tilly sounded exciting but I'll take Laura Dern :disco:

not playing the same character apparently so god knows what kind of a mess the script will be in with one character removed, another hastily added and filming already underway :eyes: but this is excellent news.

I bet she'll still fit in the wider plot in the same way, she'll just have a different name / face / style to her.

some plot and production tea...

In Cannes, two rival film teams descend upon the Cannes Film Festival with movies in competition and something to prove. One camps out at a flashy, palatial hotel on the Croisette, while the other is ensconced in a luxurious hilltop hideaway.

That’s the premise of Season 4 of Mike White’s hit anthology series “The White Lotus,” which will deliver a satire on the film industry through its story of American stars coming to the French Riviera — and once again implicating the titular hotel chain.

With a budget of around $120 million, Season 4 is shaping up to be the most ambitious shoot ever to use the festival as its central setting. Production will span roughly seven months and take place across the French Riviera and Paris, with interiors shot at the Château de la Messardière (rebranded White Lotus du Cap), the Hôtel Martinez (White Lotus Cannes) and the Hôtel Lutetia in Paris.

Across cafés, fancy shops and beach bars in Saint-Tropez, reactions ranged from “What’s ‘White Lotus’?” to “Who’s Mike White?” to “I don’t watch TV.” :disco: In Cannes, meanwhile, the Hotel Mârtinez manager declined to talk due to NDAs, but members of the staff didn’t seem aware that the production was coming to shoot — and didn’t know the show either.

and on HBC/Dern:

White had written a washed-out star who is chasing a comeback, sources tell Variety. The role was originally set for Helena Bonham Carter, who exited the HBO production — after nearly a week on set — over “creative differences” involving White’s demand for a boisterous performance; within days, she was replaced by Laura Dern.

Dern is playing a character White is developing who will fill a similar place within the ensemble.

I know Variety are just after a headline but asking random people in the street who “Mike White” is (probably without any context) just seems a little… reductive?

I know I'm SUPER LATE to the party but I finished the second season of this last night.

"Well Portia, I walked in & he was kinda... fucking his uncle"

Now hurry up and get your Posey on!

The third season was UNDERWHELMING & fell into the trap of so many shows of let's make more & longer episodes - nah it was fine AS IS. I just didn't care less about anyone & even the brotherly incest was an unresolved DAMP SQUIB (although I did chortle at "I did it because I'm a people pleaser" - me too love but I draw the line at WANKING OFF FAMILY MEMBERS!)

Hoping for a return to form in S4 although I fear it peaked with Jen in S2 :(

How will they top Parker Posey and her glazed out glory? I think season 3's biggest issue was people's expectations of what and how the show would unfold. They didn't seem to take this into account, but in a show where everyone is a walking time bomb it didn't quite reach the same heights I guess.

Season 3 was fun I thought but it just got really silly. There was too much going on by the last couple of episodes. Too many slow mo sequences - I don’t know whether White was trying to create a constant state of hallucinatory haze but it started to get hammy. That aside - the storyline with the 3 women had lots to say and there were some fantastic performances throughout. Oh and PARKER POSEY who saved the whole damn show.

I think bingeing all 3 seasons would make the third feel very different as well, put side by side.

all the seasons have been quite different from the last. I loved season 3. I think with the subject matter this one will feel quite different again.

I loved season 1 and 3 the best. Most people like 2 though. Agreed 3 could have done with some serious editing, towards the end.
