She doesn’t have much playlisting, which is a certainly a detriment and yes she doesn’t really have a signature hit driving up her overall listeners/streams.

Absent the obvious ones that have far playlist reach, Mariah doesn’t have great streaming either (US #1 Someday by Mariah is at 27m and many of her other #1s including Love Takes Time, Vision of Love, Don’t Forget About Us, I’ll Be There, Dreamlover etc are shy of 100m)
 
I wonder what thethe worst streaming US #1s of the 90s are, and how much Mariah and Janet's "lesser" #1s suffer.
 
I find it all quite fascinating looking at how many older acts have attracted streams or not in the modern era.

Janet doesn't really have a signature hit, but then that could also be said of Madonna (and arguably a lot of acts), but it doesn't seem to harm her streaming figures. What they both had was a considerable number of big hits, so the question is rather why none of Janet's seem to have endured relatively.
 
another factor could simply be that R&B doesn't stream that well compared to pop. many of Mariah's most streamed tracks (Obsessed for instance) are her more pop-adjacent. modern R&B hits don't stream as well as pop because there's less appeal globally - Folded by Kehlani (US #6, more than a year old now) has 538m streams and that's probably the bigger number in many years for a solo female R&B track. so maybe it's less surprising that R&B-leaning legends like Mimi and Janet also have lesser-streamed back cats.
 
I think of Nasty being her signature hit, with When I Think of You being the one I'd expect to be her highest by far.
 
Madonna had Vogue, Like a Prayer, Material Girl, Hung Up all fairly notable and iconic hits for her that have done varying degrees of success in streaming. Not sure I’d expect anything Janet did to come close aside from maybe Together Again.
 
How does Celine stream by comparison? Her performance seems kinda erratic?

I can’t find a comprehensive list but Tommy Page “I’ll Be Your Everything” (less than 5 million) and Surface “The First Time” (less than 6 million) appear to be among the lowest and the outliers.

Janet and Mariah’s less remembered #1s are on par with Paula Abdul, whose 5 aside from Straight Up are mostly between 20-40 million. Rush Rush is higher though at around 95m but was a 5 or 6 week #1.
 
Romantic by Karyn White has a lowly 3.5m

She Ain’t Worth It by Glen Medeiros doesn’t even appear to be in the top ten most streamed Glen Medeiros songs, though I suspect that must be an availability thing.
 
Lately by Divine appears to have less than 20,000!



The Samantha Mumba version has far exceeded it at 2.1m.

It appears to only have been added to Spotify US in recent months. Still dismal though.

I remember the Stereogum column for that one heavily implying it only got to #1 via some kind of bizarre SCAM.

That plus them having had no other hits and a search-unfriendly name presumably all contribute to its low total.

I’m pleasantly surprised that the two Wilson Phillips #1s that aren’t Hold On are in the same ballpark as the Paula, Mariah and Janet chart toppers of the day. 28m for Release Me and 22m for You’re In Love.

i can’t find any real evidence of chart rigging. It sold 82k its #1 week, which is a healthy amount for a #1 back then, and made the top ten in multiple airplay formats. And seemed to have a pretty organic run at 27 weeks and rise to #1. But payola is always possible.
 
I just had a look and the streams for Whitney's 90s #1s (other than I Will Always Love You) are abysmal. Interesting that Mariah, Madonna, Whitney and Celine all have their tentpole 90s hits (AIWFCIY / Fantasy / ABMB, Vogue, I Will Always Love You, My Heart Will Go On / Because You Loved Me), but what should be Janet's (Together Again, That's The Way Love Goes) just don't measure up.
