Mary Kiani's Front Porch Sessions

Although maybe for some it's her 2002 Eurovision contender that she'll be remembered for (famously overturned for having previously been released).

@Kala do you know more details?

I don’t - this is the first I have heard. Never In A Million Years is better than Come Back, and I think could have potentially won Eurovision that year (although she would have performed 2nd so perhaps not) but it’s an absolutely outstanding song. Such a shame it got disqualified, it was never officially released but it got promoed in 2000 (with a mix by Boy George no less) - but then Find Love by Layla from 1996 was released in 1995 and wasn’t disqualified. Of course it’s much easier now to find out this stuff than back then.

I think I recall it having being released on some compilation CD in Hungary in 1999 so the BBC decided to play it safe and disqualify it. Hungary weren’t even in the contest back in 2002 so I don’t think the song would have had an unfair advantage.

I knew she had written I Imagine but I had no idea she had released it as a single in 1992! Her ballad version is lovely! RIP Zee!

1993 (which sounds more like 1999 in style) was quite good when I heard her lip sync to it on a covid-era webcam interview, and a Glasgow contact megafan tells me she's performed it a few times when she's came over.

I'll maybe order it nearer the time - it's not a CD so I'd rather just buy it digitally.

Saw a video of Mary imploring people to buy it for her birthday, helpful suggestions such as buy it for your gay friend or someone young around 40 or 50, so I crumbled and ordered.

Do you think she'll have it on Spotify?

I can see her bringing a suitcase of the remaining copies to her next time she does a "UK tour". Would be a reasonable way to flog them.

Matt Pop though. I feel they should have covered other 90s classics instead of her own songs yet again. Intrigued for the new stuff at least - and 1993, which I have a soft spot for.

I received an email from Ross Alexander (who’s behind this project) containing a whopping 66 tracks to download for this album. I’m almost scared to download them in case Mary wreaks havoc on my device by doing so.

I heard a clip of a new song and I'm wondering if it's been written using AI - if so, truly the Val Cherish of 90s dance.

Aww. It does appear she has taken almost all of her porch song sessions down from YouTube (or made them private). They were quite something, particularly the one where she'd been scammed and had her entire bank account wiped and was singing in tears (I must sound horrible here, but I promise you it was the most theatrical thing I don't even have the words for, all the whilst her internet connection kept playing up so the screen would freeze).

Probably quite unusual for the audience members to get the actual singer for once. I'm assuming it was last year as she's rocking red hair at the moment.

Edit: good lord it's in the caption.

Not at the minute, I think they want to sell their physicals. I saw a video by Mary to flog the USB but not seeming to quite understand what it was and saying it was a CD and correcting herself.

I sold my USB on eBay when I realised I wouldn’t use it and bought the CD instead.

Having a wee moment to 1993 as lipped here at the 1:02 (1 hour 2 minutes) mark. Wee bit gutted the new album doesn't have this original version alongside the new one(ironic that neither sound anything like 1993).

I do like the the bursts of Romanian house saxophone they’ve added to the Reimagined version of 1993 though.

Just saw on instagram our Mary doll will be at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern in a few weeks (they don’t seem to have the event up on their website though 🙈)

That looks quite fun. Mind you they’ll not get through many questions as Meery Doll will go off on an instant lengthy tangent with an anecdote yet somehow circle back to the original question and actually answer it.

I threw the idea out there to my pal, but they nibbled the line only a little so looks like I'll skip it, but something about Mary talking absolute nonsense to a bunch of Londoners tickles me. So we'll see.

Producer location is my guess. I'm surprised no other gigs mentioned as normally she packs in as many as possible, presumably to fund it all. I just wonder what the numbers will be like.

Did you see she did a live from Sydney airport asking for someone to get her a gig in Glasgow for this weekend? 😂 I just love her!

"If you're having a party" :D

Aww, Cheers up in Aberdeen. I went there once a few years ago. Everyone was so friendly, coming up and saying hello. I loved it.
