I can't tell with Enya. 😅 Orinoco Flow is beloved but definitely not her best. Caribbean Blue might be one of the objective best ones (but isn't it rather beloved too?)

and Kiss, no? that also seems like a signature hit (I think it was the first Prince song I was aware of) and one of the most enduring 80s classics. I think it has quite a lot more streams than When Doves Cry too. all incredible songs obv.

agree with all of these but I do think in recent years Push the Button has become Sugababes' equally most beloved hit.

also All Saints - Pure Shores is their signature hit and their best song. :disco:
 
Oooh, I think Pure Shores has possibly overtaken of late, but I'd be interested to know if the general public might still think it's Never Ever.

Dancing Queen was my first thought. As a casual ABBA enjoyer and keen The Day Before You Came fan, DQ can fuck off.

the Superstar / Sweet Dreams My LA Ex / Biology / Hole in the Head / Strict Machine era of British pop was incredible. Richard X and Xenomania really did that.
 
Lay All Your Love on Me seems to have snuck in there to the top of the pile by stealth over the years. Sonically it out guns the other dark disco they have, and it just smoulders up against any of the other key imperial tracks.

The what now? When Doves Cry is great - isn’t even in his top 25 though. Sign O’The Times is probably his greatest marriage of funk, social commentary and pure giddy pop.
 
When Doves Cry remains his most successful single. And I think in the US, by quite a margin.

It wouldn’t be in my Top 10. But it is often regarded by many journos as his finest moment.

It was also the song that made him a superstar. He was not an A lister before WDC.
 
Prince is like Dylan or Bowie or the Beatles. It’s impossible to get everyone to agree on one defining song.
