Jason Arday dies following University of Cambridge scandal

what a horrible end to his story. poor man. I don't think a white academic who plagiarised or (possibly) faked parts of their biography would've been hounded by the media or made an example of by the university like this.
 
I agree, let's split the thread please @Moderator

it's just the way he's been hounded, and how a black person or person of colour is held to a much higher standard and then torn down so gleefully when they turn out to be imperfect or even (gasp!) a liar.

this would be a one day and done story if it was some white guy. so now he's seen his life collapse around him, people he went to primary school with talking to the media to discredit parts of his story, and thought it wasn't worth going on.

why do we do this? it was never even a story of public interest. should've been something for Cambridge to deal with privately.
 
Honestly, some of the stories were quite ludicrous and it does reflect badly that none of the universities or publishers ever stopped to check, so I do think this could have been a story were he not black (I mean, think of all the ink spilled over the Captain Tom Moore clan and the Salt Path authors, for example.) What it would not have been was not a GLOBAL MORAL PANIC about EDI. It's very unedifying and very sad.
 
I don't normally approve of not using DEAD, whatever the situation is, however he was pretty much a private citizen thrust into the headlines for a personal work matter by petty bitter bigoted journalism.

Poor man. His memoirs are due to be published imminently - he must have been looking for to this moment for months and instead he lost it all.

they were already trying to dig up anything that might get his memoir cancelled, including discrediting his claim that he was non-verbal til age 12, and asking his publisher if they planned to go ahead with it. the loss of his job was one thing but i'm guessing he knew it wasn't going to end there.
 
I hadn't really followed the story, but I was aware of it and it kept raising eyebrows that it was even on the news.

I'm sad and furious about this.
 
I was generally only aware because of the very good breakdown posted the other day from Cody Dahler. More people should have watched this.

Horrific news. A really sad story all in all too. He couldn't have gone back to his old life - not after the sheer scale of the stuff that had clearly been fabricated - but he clearly had a talent for something and could have found a redemptive, honest path from that if he'd wanted. There was an audience that was on his side to some extent.

(I mean god, if Johann Hari could make a comeback...)

I suspect as well as everything else he was probably in quite deep financial trouble - given he would have been earning a lot and was spending quite a big chunk on top dollar pitbull lawyers like Carter Ruck, in likely anticipation of going stratospheric with the book release and becoming a big known figure/possibly breaking the States, only to see it all go up in smoke.
 
The whole thing is so sad. The initial 'investigation' should have just been an internal affair within the University. God knows pretty much every institute and company is chock full of people who have embellished and bullshitted their way into their positions and it's never challenged.
 
I think a crucial distinction is that he was being lined up to be a figure of public interest to be taken seriously and bought into with the release of the book (and indeed, quite a lot was invested into defending that prospect).

It's absolutely been overblown and there was a clear broader, malign agenda in a lot of the coverage. But I think quite rightly a fair few more fair minded observers came to the view that it's not altogether plausible to switch wholesale from the position that you should be about to be presented as a big public figure who warrants media attention and being taken seriously, to 'this is all a private internal matter - nothing to see here', the second the entire edifice that you've put quite a lot of work into presenting / aggressively lawyering even impartial enquiries against comes crashing down.

It's disgraceful and the person who sounded off the alarm was also fired - I assume there was just as much press surrounding their own incident.
 
It's a tragic situation and should never have come to this. However, this guy was as complete narcissist, and when he was found out this was always going to be one of the possible outcomes. I hope he has peace.

The inevitable revisionism. I did catch a few articles last night in the wake of the announcement, before the deletions began and the headlines were revolting.

They spend weeks piling in on him, but even as collective units rather than individuals, they won't allow themselves to face similar scrutiny.

Pathetic pussyholes.
