Posters who have cats

In my experience if a cat is hungry, you are really not going to hear the end of it from them. If they are doing anything other than climbing all over your face and screaming at you then probably they are perfectly happy with their diet.
 
Exactly - it's much easier to overfeed a cat than underfeed it.

And in my experience no matter how much you do feed them, they STILL are on the lookout for more. You can guarantee that if one of us opens the fridge regardless of time of day or night, or when they were most recently fed, at least one of them will be sitting hopefully staring at you by the time you close it.
 
I’ve taken to opening packets of ham out in the laundry room because Tank can sense them being opened - even with a sharp knife to muffle the sound - from anywhere in the house.
 
What does everyone feed their cats? Mine are on Whiska's wet food fish favourites and then Hills oral care with chicken for their dry food. You can get a massive bag of the dry food from Pets at Home for about 56 pounds. I highly recommend it, it's tasty for them and healthy for their teeth and gums.
 
So, they eat Felix wet. Of an evening they get that cut with Tasty Shreds. And in terms of dry they get a mix of Felix Double Delicious and Whiskers Dry Complete.
 
If we are having chicken they get a little, washed and unsalted, they also get occasional frozen fresh fish. Besides thst no human food / no scraps.
 
I'm giving Edgar Blink and Scrumbles wet, and thrive biscuits.

All of them are very high in protein and low in carbs.

After having a diabetic cat with Heathcliff, I've done a lot of research in how to avoid itm a lot do cat food is high in carbs which can cause obesity and diabetes.
 
We tend to go mid range/more expensive on dry food that they all eat, but aren't loyal to any particular brands - I'll buy whatever seems to be a good deal, usually on amazon. At the moment they are on Wellness Core biscuits. For wet food it's more likely something cheaper like Felix although they much prefer anything in gravy or sauce to any of the jelly varieties. Which suits me fine, as there's something about the jelly in pet food that gives me the ick.
 
Cat owners....do any of you put your cats into a cattery when you go away?

We had a cat sitter who was going to have Edgar whenever we went away, but due to health issues she's had to cancel. So I'm putting him into a cattery but I'm worried he will think I've abandoned him :(

my parents have always done this with Stan the cat when they go away and he always comes back happy enough. do you know anyone who's used a cattery and can recommend it? if not just check the reviews are strong.

In the short term, he probably WILL feel like that. But he'll quickly adapt. And he'll be over it in no time when you're back.

Yeah the one I wanted, my mum and brother use but she's fully booked because it's such short notice.

I've got him booked into one that gets pretty much all 5 star reviews.

He's a pretty confident kitten so I'm hoping he will be ok 🤞🏻

But I have to stay at home for the September break because its too short notice to book him anywhere :(

I mean he has to get used to it because we go away a fair bit so I'm hoping to keep him in the same one each time
 
I've put my cats in a cattery before. Two of them were fine and two of them didn't like it.

Didn't like it as in refused to eat and we're stressed or just seemed pissed off when you picked them up?
 
The cattery kept their carriers in the enclosure and when I went to pick them up they were in the back in their carriers. They seemed fine when they were back home though.

Ours go to the cattery.

Milo is reasonably sanguine but will still stick his paws out to make it as difficult as possible to get him in his carrier.

Tank would, given the option, probably kill you and eat you. He has absolute phobia of ‘the man’ coming to pick him up from the cattery. He is both fight AND flight. I usually have to wear a big winter coat to protect myself and honestly - I can’t even get excited about a holiday until its done because just thinking about what a mad violent stress its going to be to get him there kind of gets in the way of things.

They always come back in good condition and seemingly happy enough. He just hates change. But they go a few times a year so I think much as they are not keen, they are used to it.

When I had a dog though, which I got as a 2 year old that had been in kennels for 18 months I never ever put her in a kennels again because I thought she would just lose her mind assuming she was abandoned again - i went to ridiculous lengths to not do that including flying family members down to look after her or driving great distances to drop her off.
 
Incidentally, absolute SCENES here just now because I didn’t immediately feed them the moment I got home despite it not being dinner time yet:

@ExcitableWoof so you put yours in a cattery and just assume they're ok and once you've got them there you don't worry? I think that's what I'm going to have to do!
 
How much does a cattery cost where y'all live? As someone who lives alone, it's one of the things that really discourages me from adopting a cat.
 
I don't think I could ever put a beloved pet into a cattery or kennel. It seems so incredibly cruel to me. I'd much rather have a friend come and feed them etc.

Well technically I basically try to bury the guilt. And then I bribe them with fresh chicken on return. Chicken will get you absolutely anywhere with them, they are feral for chicken.

A fucking fortune. Seriously. Very much would like to find someone to come chill with them and feed them when we are away but need to totally trust that person.

Ideally I would do this - but it's quite a commitment really since failure would result in me Having To Kill That Person.

I've always had people come and check on my old cats, but Edgar is way too young to be left. He's only 6 months, still an absolute terror and could easily injure himself, so it's much safer for him to be in a secure environment.

£18 a day on the isle of Wight. They do provide all the food and litter, but I'm having to take my own food in as they don't have my particular food.

But it's £12-15 per visit to have someone come into the house and check on them. 2 visits a day is £24-30, so cattery is cheaper.
 
The cattery mine go to was over 400 pounds for about 5 days but I have 4 cats and they provide all the food and litter etc.
