Based entirely on his arrival scenes last year, he felt like a clear case of I WON'T TAKE MY COAT OFF, I'M NOT STOPPING from the start. Too good an actor to stay long.
That said, it's obvs a mixed bag for post EE careers. Of the recent successful ones Tamwar's probably done best and he was on EE for nearly a decade!
Google says Sam Strike (who left after a year) and Ben Hardy (three years) have had decent careers too. Maddy Hill left after a year, went straight into Casualty, and has only had EE returns as acting work since.
