AI content on moopy - do we need or want to adopt a community policy/approach?

I do feel like fighting against A.I. is like fighting against the industrial revolution, TV or the Internet. Before you know it you won't have a choice.
 
I don't think we are fighting against AI. But I also don't think it's absurd not to have a policy around excessive and nefarious AI content just because its possible.
 
Like people dying from COVID was inevitable but no one was advocating for a moopy meet where we all spat in each others mouths.

I'm not really sure what people want by a policy to be or who they want to police it.

No images, no music, no written text that was ever generated by AI? What about an article from a newspaper that was probably half ghost-written by AI? No spell check, fact checking, news about AI? Information generated yourself or by others?

It's an absolute minefield. I'm pretty good at spotting what has been written by AI but i'm by no means perfect and get it wrong sometimes. Are we to delete any post that looks remotely like AI contributed?

It feels like i'm being facetious but 50-odd posts in i'm not in the slightest bit clear what this "policy" is
 
I think a lot of members have put forward very sensible proposals. It is up to the admin team to go away now and consider what the membership has proposed. Of course there will be diverse views but even if more members vote for not having a policy (which is not the case at the moment), I believe it would be prudent to have one in place.
 
You may even wish to consider having a 'cap' on generative AI content or limits as to the type of generative AI content you want on Moopy. I know I have been fooled by stuff that I didn't know was AI. It would be good for us as a community to have a stance.

Actually it's more about responsible use of AI in my opinion, but sure I accept that some people just don't like 'AI slop'.

I don't think anyone has actually said they want to ban anything with any hint of possibly being written or edited by AI?

the reason it's not clear what the policy is is because there isn't one yet - the idea being that we discuss what one could look like. thank you @Tetris-Rock and @Suedehead and @big ron for the suggestions on this score!
 
In my head the line would be

- Obvious or labelled links to external sources that might be AI - fine, we can't police what is published outside of Moopy, and so long as it's very clear to other members that's what it is, all is well. There'll certainly be times when AI content is news /topic-worthy in its own right.

- Members presenting AI content unlabelled and as if genuinely their own thoughts or creation, not fine. It's no better than the spambots we ban and consign to the Cheap Seats.


That's of course a PRINCIPLE. The reality of policing that would undoubtedly be a nightmare. We'd realistically only to be able to remove content if it was UNQUESTIONABLY slop, and accept there'd be lots that goes undetected.

I get AI is inevitable. But if I wanted to speak to chatbots instead of humans, I'd be on ChatGPT or the Google AI assistant, not Moopy.

the mod team obviously. but hopefully with a clear policy in place there wouldn't be that much actual policing to do.

a good start would be -
all AI visuals restricted to threads like "post an AI image of" and all chatgpt generated "comedy" posts to live in a thread about chatgpt.
perhaps with a "flag AI" button so that posts elsewhere in which (for example) an obviously AI generated image are posted can either be moved or at least flagged.

the policy can also evolve and doesn't need to be locked in now. it's probably better to start by doing something than nothing.

I'm just trying to understand the problem statement and what we are trying to solve. Not being critical.
 
Speaking of what the mods are expected to do, any news on moderator and admin elections?

I think the problem with my suggestion is that is doesn’t really match up with an environmental impetus for the ban … it works better if the reason is “ai promotes misinformation” or “ai creates shit, low effort content”. If people are able to post AI content to their heart’s content in specific threads then an environmental impact remains.

I think there would also need to be caveats for posts and threads about use of ai in all walks of life - like, within the current thread of use of AI in music, it makes sense to be able to post ai-generated content in there because it is relevant to the discussion. Equally if … I don’t know … KERRY KATONA is doing a comeback tour and has made a hilariously shit ai poster to promote it then I want to be people to make fun of her!

In terms of policing it… I think it would be far too onerous to expect admins and mods to keep on top of it themselves… so much of it is down to discretion too. Could be a minefield but I stand by my suggestion of a “report ai slop” button but we’d have to trust Moopists to use it in good faith.
 
Anyway, my tuppence on a policy

1. A general rule not to post AI-generated excessively. Kind of open-ended, but I'm sure the modmincetary community can judge it. (Sorry but I just don't see the benefit to anyone of threads full of genAI low effort shitposts while the world burns around us)

2. Some form of AI-generated tag. If everything AI based is going to have some sort of digital fingerprint that might be something for the future. Maybe I can Claude Code a Xenforo plugin to do it.
 
It sounds like people prefer a more moderate community-policing approach rather than a hard authority one? Which probably makes sense for Moopy because none of our members are excessive posters of AI content. As far as I know anyway - I did mute the Enya thread.

Yes of course it’s inevitable. I’m not a fan of it either, but you can’t start policing content you don’t like. How silly.

God if I had my way every time I saw a post or thread I didn’t like…

The only thing that should be be banned on moopy is offensive behaviour and I think we’ve all shaped those boundaries nicely over time.

AI images that are clearly AI images are offensive why? People aren’t creating Enya images to infringe on Enya’s income or identity. It’s just a bit of closed community gay chat lounge nonsense

We really need to stop with all this policing.
