Cam Norrie came back to dump out de Minaur in 3 :o going into the round of 16 in Montreal the top remaining seeds are

Shelton
Musetti
Lehecka
Ruud
Jodar
Mensik
Tien
Tiafoe

:eyes:

god, the men really are useless. Djokovic confirmed he will play Cincinatti and at this rate he'll walk it.

Coco has always been a wonderfully nuanced person around all sorts of sports topic that cross into culture, politics and human rights. She’s miles above most of the tennis crop.

I know the WTA gets a lot of stick for how they handled the entire topic and approach and that’s deserved but let’s not forget why this cookie is crumbling in the first place.

Kostyuk v Swiatek is such a TASTY match to kick off the round of 16

so Swiatek beat Kostyuk in 3. Pegula OUT to Shnaider. Sabalenka OUT to Alexandrova. Anisimova OUT to Svitolina. :o

on the men's sexy Fils is into the QFs, and Jodar continues to trample everybody - they play each other next

Think I'd like to see Fonseca play Jodar in the final. Let's see if they're capable of getting a Sincaraz rivalry going - or at least a capability to start challenging the top 2.

We’re solidly team Coco here!
(and Svitolina from the top half)

Sinner will also skip Cincinatti citing a knee injury. another huge chance for whichever of the men is even slightly clutch. will be even be fit to play the USO?

I would say hopefully not, but I shouldn't be wishing for Sinner to be out unless Zverev is also sidelined.

Tien and Mensik - both less than a year older than Fonseca - are ranked 9 and 10 places higher than him. Why everyone has it in their heads that Fonseca is part of this new 'big 2' with Jodar is beyond me. Both Tien and Mensik strike me as having more consistency and a better ability to adapt to different courts than Fonseca does.

And Jodar really does seem to be a lot better than Fonseca too.

We shall see @cwej

One or the other of us will eventually promote this post with this:

:WellThereWeAre:

I'm here for Mensik too, although I've never seen Tien play :o

But I feel he might be the Safin/Pierce of his generation. I have nothing to go on other than feelings though.

Perhaps @BoysForSeles could give a better technical explanation of who's better & what not. Only thing I can do is serve OK :D

Fonseca has a high ceiling but doesn't seem very (c-word) in the big games...

another one to add to the debate is Daniel Merida. in the QFs of Canada having never won a tour level match before this year and already inside the top 40. very watchable player with quite a pair of eyebrows on him. he owned Griekspoor.

exciting times for the young men breaking through but someone really has to step up and win a slam and break this duopoly.

Rybakina eased into it and ultimately beat Osaka in 3. I fell asleep during the 2nd and was quite surprised to see that result this morning.

great lineup for the semis!

both really could go either way but I'm calling Swiatek vs Gauff in the final

Djokovic beaten in the first round.

some cracking round of 16 ties coming up today

Jodar v Cobolli (4pm)
Fils v De Minaur
Tiafoe v Auger Aliassime
Pegula
v Cirstea
Kostyuk v Andreeva
Shnaider v Rybakina
Anisimova
v Noskova

Anisimova dispatched of Eala so maybe she's a dark horse (as much as a top 10 seed can be)

is there any actual competitive advantage to coke? doesn't it thin the blood, slow recovery etc?

players do have lives and many of them are very sheltered and may want to try these things occasionally. it feels odd that taking it recreationally should lead to a ban from sport rather than, say, a first warning. it's not a performance enhancing drug.

Sabalenka OUT in the round of 16 in Cinci :) what a summer she's having - Rybakina almost certain to become world #1 before or during the US Open

QFs

Anisimova vs Pegula
Gauff vs Kostyuk
Keys vs Bejlek
Rybakina vs Swiatek

I don't dare predict any of those except to say I think Iga makes the final. and the men -

Cobboli vs Paul
Tirante vs Fils
Fritz vs Nakashima
Musetti vs Tiafoe

I see lovely monsieur Fils in the final

Jess defeated Amanda in 3 to make the SF. she's now only the second American to get 100 hard court wins in 1000 events (lol), after Serena.

After winning the title in Canada, Iga is now in the SF in Cincinnati. I wasn’t expecting that from her going into the US Open.
