Topkapi (1964)

Topkapi is a sun‑drenched caper where Elizabeth Lipp (Melina Mercouri) swans about like a Greek Yootha Joyce, assembling a heist crew to steal a bejewelled dagger from a Turkish museum — and frankly, her entire oeuvre now needs to be mined for similar camp treasures! Arthur Simpson (Peter Ustinov) plays a fluttery little gay‑coded hustler — see him furtively reading Mr Universe magazine! — who gets dragged into the plot, plays off both sides of the law, and somehow wins Ustinov his second Oscar for being permanently overwhelmed. The gang’s heist prep includes a gloriously unnecessary set piece involving oily Turkish wrestlers in a giant stadium, filmed with such lingering enthusiasm that the queer coding stops being “subtext” and becomes “oh, they absolutely knew what they were doing.” And yes: this is the film that inspired the iconic dangling‑from‑the‑ceiling sequence in Mission Impossible (and, crucially, The Great Muppet Caper).

Pontypool (2008). Creepy, funny, nasty and clever indie movie with two excellent leads.

The History of Sound (2025)

Not sure expanding this short story into a two-hour film really worked. Kind of wish I hadn't read it first. Lovely ACTING though.

How you gonna keep them DOWN ON THE FARM
After they've seen JOSH O'CONNOR'S COCK

Revenge (1971)

Closed the loop on Joan Collins' wilderness era with this last night. I'd been putting it off because I heard it was quite nasty. It's not at all really, though I suppose the subject matter (and 70s Britain) is rather GRIM. The family of a murdered girl kidnap the local weirdo they believe is the paedophile serial killer and keep him locked up in their basement.

It's all a bit dull really, and Joan has the most unflattering hair I've ever seen and fucks off halfway through the film on the back of a motorcycle with her stepson/ lover..

The Housemaid (2025)

Sydney Sweeney takes a live in job at Amanda Seyfried's mansion but all isn't what it seems. Based on a bestselling book I've never read, this is a slick & glossy thriller that twists round like Gone Girl. Some might consider it all ludicrous & OTT, but I enjoyed the camp touches & had proper fun. Excellent!

Finally watching The Sheep Detectives. Nicholas Braun has one of the best English accents I’ve ever heard from an American :o

Woman On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown (1988)

The big international breakthrough for Pedro Almodóvar, this frantic & flamboyant farce is bright, fun & enjoyable & a brisk watch at 84 minutes. The contrast between this & his crude, amateurish debut is huge.

Blue Film (2025)

Two handed film about a cam sex worker and a client who reconnect after many years. I don’t know quite what I was expecting but the film fairly zipped by with only the two characters on screen for 99% of the film. Acting was great from them both but not everyone will be comfortable with the themes raised*

*Trigger warning that this features themes of child sexual abuse

Who's That Girl (1987)

Madonna gets out of jail & farcical SHENANIGANS ensue with hapless Griffin Dunne in tow. Marge is trying too hard to be Carole Lombard, but she's not bad outside of the squeaky voice & this tribute to the old screwball comedies didn't deserve the full-on critical hammering it got - it's a bemusing little watch. With her dominance of the music charts at the time & media coverage at saturation point, the backlash had to be directed somewhere, I guess.

A Touch Of Class (1973)

Divorced Glenda Jackson swans off to Malaga for a week of SAUCY FUN with married George Segal but things get comical & complicated. I wanted to see how OUR GLENDA, who I've always found STERN & FORBIDDING, coped with an (Oscar winning) comedic role. Although she acts well & ENUNCIATES BEAUTIFULLY, neither she nor the film made me laugh. Neither character is very sympathetic, & it'd be better pitched as an oddball romance rather than the poor attempts at farce. One line about being raped has also aged very badly.
