What other black women does he have to pick from? The only other realistic option is Stacey Abrams (Whom I'd prefer, obvs).
 
Apparently they generally do multiple of these type of things do keep it secret.

However I've seen Kamala cited as most likely before.

apparently it is 100% definitely a black woman and the shortlist is down to Harris, Rice, Demings and Bass (Abrams is out) - a shame as I think Tammy Duckworth, as a disabled ex-military vet and an Asian woman with a great story, would've been a really very solid choice
 
Surely Harris is the only one with the necessary experience? It's probably better than evens that Biden won't last the full term if he wins.
 
My theory is that Biden will step after three years and hand over the Presidency to a black woman.
 
Kamala Harris seems like a terrible choice if they're going specifically for the cultural signifiers of picking a black woman due to the current moment, what with her being (in her own words) "California's top cop" who helped put countless people of colour behind bars during her career.
 
A more liberal choice will only appeal to their existing voter base, this could be an attempt to sway the ‘law and order’ republicans.
 
Of course the best bit about this would be the resurgence of the K-HIVE on Twitter, the most deranged of all of 2020's political stan groups :disco:

Exactly. Harris has been very outspoken about judicial reform in the wake of George Floyd, but if she's also not seen as an obvious enemy to the police that can only be a good thing in terms of picking up voters from across party lines. Besides, it is possible for people's views to evolve over the course of a decade (which is where COB's quote comes from).

Harris was asked last month on ABC’s “The View” for her thoughts on the Defund the Police police movement.

The debate, the senator said, is about “reimagining how we do public safety in America...We have confused the idea that to achieve safety you put more cops on the street instead of understanding to achieve safe and healthy communities, you put more resources into the public education system of those communities, into affordable housing, into home ownership, into access to capital for small businesses, access to health care regardless of how much money people have. That’s how you achieve safe and healthy communities.”

Call me a cynic if you like but I don't trust politicians whose views on important issues 'evolve', particularly when they seem to evolve at the exact same time as polling shows support for particular ideas; I didn't trust it when a load of Democrats suddenly 'evolved' on gay marriage a decade ago, and I don't trust Harris now. I'm not sure this is even a reply to any particular post any more - I'm just sad that so few politicians seem to actually have principles (I know I know, they're politicians, but we all deserve better). Shouldn't certain things be set in stone, a matter of right and wrong?
 
I would be surprised if it is anyone but Harris.

Susan Rice has never stood for election before so is completely untested in that regard. The controversy surrounding the Benghazi attack in 2012 would be a primary point of attack for the Republicans. Why on earth would the Democrats want to open up that can of worms again?

Val Demmings is a former police chief who led the impeachment proceedings against Trump. As she comes under scrutiny, she could end up being attacked from all sides.
 
Well TBH, I personally don't give a fuck what Kamala Harris, or any politician for that matter, believes deep down in their soul. If she's now in favour of police reform because it's politically expedient for her in this moment, fine! It still means she's more likely to enact positive change than an idealist who alienates half the country and doesn't know how to play the game.

The whole evolution of the conversation of LGBTQ+ rights is actually a great example of what I'm talking about.

Was the conversation an entirely organic and altruistic one that was in no way influenced by cultural pressures and a desire to win young voters? Of course not. Do we now have legalised gay marriage and a demonstrably better world for millions of LGBT people in America? Yes.

People really need to fixate less on the journey and more on the destination. People shift the cultural needle, politicians just react to it. It's been that way since the dawn of time and it's not going to change any time soon.

Remember this can work the other way though. A politician can be more to the left (or right) than the platform they present at the time, but they play the game to elected. If your principles won't get you elected, then there is a strong argument to temper them and push from the inside until those principles do then become electable.

This is something the right seems very good at and the left really need to start playing the game more.

Even if he somehow manages to get the election delayed, surely that won't work in his favour..?

I can't see a sudden OUTPOUR OF VOTES because Trump legitimately messed with basic American democracy.

What's next - CANCEL THE ELECTION FOREVER? :)
 
I think, from my shakey knowledge of US systems, the only way to do it would be a supermajority at a constitutional convention? Which would never happen unless it was genuinely death and destruction?

Who knows anymore, a lot of these people seem to think that the whole Corona crisis is a conspiracy against America, so delaying the elections will be a heroic thing to do.

Trump and Pence's terms come to an end in January anyway if there hasn't been an election by then. The question of who would replace him as president is ridiculously complicated, but, assuming all congressional elections are delayed as well, one plausible outcome seems to the that it would be the president pro tempore of the Senate, who would be elected by the senators from the largest party after everyone who is up for re-election this year has also had their term expire. There are way more Republican seats up for re-election than Democrat ones, so the Democrats would be the largest party in January. As to who they might choose, he's an independent at the moment, but Bernie Sanders would be an interesting possibility.
 
It better not be cancelled on the principle that it’ll be nice to have an election result go the CORRECT way for once.
