The working class needs to take the party back. There should be mandatory shortlists for working class, non-graduate candidates. You shouldn't need a degree to become a Labour MP. Focus on a populist, universalist economic message, which is the best way of improving social equality anyway. Accept Brexit and frame greater state aid as sticking it to the EU. Stick to a party line and enforce it, instead of MPs regularly undermining the leadership and saying stupid things on Twitter.

To be honest, I think the coalition of voters that would make Labour electable doesn't exist anymore, so it's a moot point. They're trying to bring together two sets of people who have very little common ground. The last 10-15 years has shown the folly of thinking the non-graduate class will follow them blindly. And it's not just a party issue, the left in this country has incompatible views with a lot of the people it claims to represent.

Not sure on who the alternative is, but Ian Lavery should have run for leader.
 
He obviously wasn't my first choice, but Keir could have been fine if he'd stuck to his pledge to be the UNITY CANDIDATE.

Instead it feels like he's worked harder against unions and his own party than the government.
 
I LOVE Zarah Sultana, and the FABULOUS Nadia Whittome who is a total QUEEN! Leader and deputy please!

If we are talking realistic Labour candidates, Angela Rayner would be my preferred choice. She's not as tainted as Long-Bailey by the public and much more charismatic. Lisa Nandy would probably poll better than Starmer too, although I don't really LIKE HER.

I think the Greens really need to take control of their destiny however and see the opportunity Labour are gifting them. People from across the political spectrum WANT to vote for them (INCLUDING old Tories with environment concerns, they exist!), they are just scared their vote will be wasted.
 
The more results come in, the more likely it seems that there will be another General Election before the end of the year. There will absolutely never be a better time for Boris to sew up another five years. :(

It's a very slow work in progress for the Greens, but they're ahead of the LDs in a few polls, so there's an opportunity there. Lucas is always pushing for an electoral pact with Labour.
 
I don't think Boris wants another five years though. By all accounts he hates the job (GOOD!)

My bet is he stands down within 18 months and triggers an election with Gove or Sunak at the helm.
 
As for the Greens, I'm heartened by their success and it does feel like a dam could break to get them past their rut of only really being competitive in Brighton when it comes to the GE. But they're going to have to be a bit more pragmatic in some of their policies if they really want to break through.

If they can become the third biggest party in Britain it's looking like Labour will HAVE to enter a pact with them :D
Obviously a while off as they only have one MP (who is also likely their only realistic leader for further growth) but not impossible!

This is why I don’t think it would be right for Labour to fall into step with Brexit. Those of us who are against it, or have been affected by it, need a credible party to hold the Tories to account for the massive fucking mess they’ve caused.
 
Brexit it still hugely popular in communities where it hasn't had a visible impact on their lives. Sadly I fear this was always going to be the case. It's an ideology, not a policy.
 
Whilst I'm in total agreement about how Starmer is not the right man for the job, even after I hoped initially he would be, a lot of the blame for this has to lie with the Momentum crowd and the STRANGE desire to say "I told you so" rather than actually vote against the Tories. I'm in Whatsapp group as we speak with a VERY VERY VERY left wing friend who is going on about how Corbyn united the left and leave and remain voters and in Hartlepool, the Labour vote has declined year on year EXCEPT in 2017, which was evidence of what a great job he was doing.

For what it's worth, I don't think there's much of a Momentum crowd in Hartlepool. The Whippet Liberation Front candidate FLOPPED.

Either way, there is SO LITTLE to read into the Hartlepool result as much as the media want it to be. I won't support or criticise Starmer for it. The left wingers are rabid that it shows Corbyn was better, and it's just nonsense.

Brexit party people moved to Tories, plus a little vaccine bounce, and it's basically the same result as 18 months ago.
 
BBC talking about a "close race" for the London Mayoral election. That would be unexpected - surely it's too early to know anything at all.
 
I do enjoy the thought that Johnson has been dreaming of being PM for decades, but now he is he HATES IT.

I also enjoy that his money worries are largely caused by his inability to keep his cock in his pants :)
 
I've already seen a few seats where Labour lost to Conservatives by less than the vote swing to the Greens...

Bailey had a strong start because they counted the Tory areas first. Khan has now taken the lead.

I suspect a lot of people will have done what I did, which is put Khan second, so he will have no trouble at all once it goes to the second choice votes.

They have so little in the way of results for it that I think it's just the BBC trying to build drama. The final poll showed quite a large swing to the Conservatives but he still wasn't anyway near winning, I'd be very surprised if he did!
 
Surely a close race in London means that it might just about go to the second choice votes. I refuse to accept that it could conceivably be remotely close in a straight fight between Khan and Bailey.
