Fairytale seems to have taken a hit, Wham! benefited from George dying and Elton just having a general resurgence.

Christmas playlists are partly to blame as they tend to favour the American hits over the British ones

I remember a couple of Christmases ago that the songs outside of the very biggest ones (Mariah, Wham, Shaky and The Pogues) charted in pretty much the exact order they were featured on the main Spotify Christmas playlist.

Obviously playlists are always important, but at Christmas more than ever.

Two that seem to have really faded in recent years that are very much part of my childhood

Greg Lake - I Believe In Father Christmas
David Essex - A Winters Tale

Kinda shocking that Cliff Richard doesn’t feature when those two were absolutely massive at the time. Mistletoe and Wine in particular. Although I do think they have dated far more than other older Christmas songs and I don’t miss them, personally. They’re never on my playlists

I don't think Mistletoe And Wine and Saviour's Day are forgotten exactly, but it's true you seem to have to search them out unlike other Christmas songs you have no choice about hearing. He had a few other Christmas hits didn't he, and then other songs made festive (his version of Daddy's Home was huge for one), and I seem to remember thinking he was Mr Christmas for a lot of the 80s and 90s.

I think M&W in particular still features on radio and TV a lot to be fair. And on the christmas compilations. Just not in digital playlists.

Not that I'd ever begrudge Kylie an annual trip to the top 40, but it's weird to me that she has the definitive version of Santa Baby these days. Eartha Kitt's is really the one.
