2022 Midterm Elections (US)

The AP has Nevada's Senate race 850 votes apart with 95% of the vote in. :o

This is the Republican candidate that Mark Kelly just defeated in Arizona. American politics is truly wild. :D

and the republicans will continue to wonder why they underperform, while simultaneously nominating the most bizarre people

I find it interesting that a Trump-backed governor has won in Nevada, but fingers crossed it looks like the Senate seat will stay blue.

You'd think if you were minded to go down the split ticket route because you believe in balance, you'd do it the other way round. Aim to put the Senate into Republican hands while protecting Democracy in your home state. Was Joe Lombardo a particularly strong candidate, or Steve Sisolak a particularly weak one, does anyone know?

Technically the person Perry and Paltrow (and Chris Pratt and sundry other rich LA types) voted for is registered as a Democrat, but he switched affiliations quite recently, likely because a Republican would be very unlikely to win in LA.

Doesn't make things much better, but it's probably useful context. He's also a billionaire who self funded his campaign to the tune of $30 million in a city plagued by a serious homelessness problem.

I don’t think Lombardo was particularly Trumpy

Ah, the reports all describe him as 'Trump-backed', and it looks like he did endorse him, but if he's actually a bit more moderate hopefully it won't be too ominous for future elections in that state.

I don’t know that much about him, just what I’ve seen on Twitter, but I don’t think he’s moderate. Just not an election denier

The bar really is on the floor, isn't it? :D

I'm interested to see what the Republicans take away from all this when the dust settles. Trumpism imploding is very satisfying, but DeSantis basically seems to have succeeded based on aggressive voter suppression and culture war bollocks, so I don't have high hopes that they'll become less openly evil any time soon.

Massive upset here in a seat that has been solidly Republican for over a decade :o

It really is looking like Lauren fucking Boebert could be the decider at this point.

Even funnier because they replaced a moderate Republican who voted for Trump's impeachment with a MAGA nutcase, who clearly alienated enough of the electorate to throw away a very safe seat. :D

In the first impeachment of Donald Trump, on December 18, 2019, Jaime Herrera Beutler voted against both articles of impeachment, along with all other voting Republicans. On January 12, 2021, she announced her support for Trump's second impeachment, after the storming of the U.S. Capitol six days earlier, citing "indisputable evidence" that Trump had "acted against his oath of office". She blamed him for inciting the storming and upbraided him for continuing to push lawmakers to object to certifying the results of the presidential election rather than "doing anything meaningful to stop the attack". She called Trump's initial statement denouncing the violence "pathetic". Responding to claims that impeaching Trump would only "inflame Republican voters", Herrera Beutler said that as a Republican herself, she believed that she and other Republicans "will be best served when those among us choose truth". The next day, she and nine other Republican representatives voted to impeach Trump.

Former Green Beret Joe Kent challenged Herrera Beutler in the 2022 top-two primary for Congress. A Trump supporter, Kent ran because of her vote to impeach Trump. Kent supports claims that the 2020 presidential election was fraudulent and has said that Trump bears no responsibility for the storming of the Capitol. In December 2021, State Representative Vicki Kraft announced her intention to run against Herrera Beutler. Kraft has voiced support for false claims of fraud in the 2020 election and called Herrera Beutler's vote to impeach Trump an "unfortunate decision". In the nonpartisan blanket primary, Herrera Beutler failed to advance to the general election, losing to Kent and Democrat Marie Perez. On August 9, she conceded, saying, "I’m proud that I always told the truth, stuck to my principles, and did what I knew to be best for our country."

I also have my eye on QoL Katie Porter and her infamous WHITE BOARDS, who is currently narrowly ahead in a very tough race in Orange County California.

I bet none of those vile HOUSEWIVES voted for her.

Wow. Even Rob Lowe couldn’t win in Orange County.

As did the 'fabulous' Gwyneth Paltrow :eyes:

Was Trump not expected to say he was standing for 2024 this coming week, Tuesday, maybe? Surely he won't.

They want Mitch McConnell gone - the Trump wing blames him for the disastrous midterm results. They want Rick Scott - who has much closer ties to Trump - to step up as minority leader instead.

I believe they're also aligning around Jim Jordan - another Trump loyalist - as House Leader rather than heir apparent Kevin McCarthy.

They're going to tear each other to shreds, basically :disco:

The tables have turned haven't they? Few years ago, the Democrats were scrambling between Hillary and Bernie, and couldn't unify their constituents under either. Now the same is happening between Trump and DeSantis.

And when 2024 comes, you know damn well Trump is petty enough to cheer for a Democrat and throw DeSantis under the bus just to spite him.

Thank the Lord. The alternative would've been so catastrophic for the state.
