there's been some fun collections in that time, just nothing essential. but like... that's OK. Versace will always have the 90s. her legacy is not as a designer per se but protecting Gianni's legacy and keeping the brand relevant. she's done a great job at that without pushing for anything new creatively.

I love that Donatella has on numerous occasions stated she'd love to be Gaga if she could be someone else.

And the song is not capable of being condensed down to the scale of being rated out of 10 frankly. The rich bitch Richter scale perhaps might accom it. It's an avalanche.
 
Well it has to be better than being owned by MICHAEL KORS! From what I’ve heard the company is an absolute MESS atm.
 
Even if it wasn't a mess, being owned by Michael Kors is just tragic. Everything he touches turns to shit. They did the same to Jimmy Choo.

So this is one of Dario Vitale's first high profile pieces for Versace. I don't like it. Beautiful color, but just matronly. And I hate the way the print (which is an archival reference) has been done on her arm.

Dario Vitale has already exited Versace. After one (very tragic) collection.
 
It really wasn’t that bad for a debut and better than what DV was churning out at the end. This is so WICKED. Prada tried to cancel the show before they even took over, the poor cunt was getting binned no matter what he did.
 
Heavy rumors that Pieter Mulier (current designer of Alaia) is the new Creative Director. Mixed opinions on his suitability for Versace. He's got the expertise and the vision, but he can also be too calculated and stiff. Basically he's too Belgian.
 
LOL sorry. It's a running 'joke' that Belgian designers are diehard intellectualists. I think it's because there's a noticeable presence of Belgian designers re-emerging amongst European fashion houses. Matthieu Blazy at Chanel, Pieter Mulier at Alaia, Raf Simons at Prada, Glenn Martens at Maison Margiela AND Diesel.

Antwerp-trained designers are just a different breed. Their rigor and perfectionism has become something people resent them for. And it's why there's suspicion that they'll try to forcibly intellectualize a loose and frivolous house like Versace.

It's getting VERY mixed reponses, but I think it's MOSTLY good.

On one hand, Mulier is a top-notch Triple A designer. His technique and craftsmanship are nothing short of elite and he's very well respected in the industry. Which is a very good sign because it means Prada is taking Versace seriously and willing to compete for the best resources. Apparently they've been eyeing him for FIVE YEARS - before they even acquired Versace. I can only imagine the paycheck they threw at him. Their plan is clearly to restore Versace's design authrority. If they were buying it simply to reduce it to an influencer brand (which is basically what it is right now), they wouldn't be gunning for someone like Mulier. This ALONE make me hopeful.

On the other hand, people are skeptical if he's a good fit. He comes from that Belgian tradition of restraint and rigor over glamor or sensuality - something people criticized him for at Alaia. Versace is risky and kinda nasty. I'm not sure how effectively he'll inrepret that. I'm also interested to know how he'll replace Donatella SYMBOLICALLY to the public. Her glossy image became absolutely synonymous with the brand and a large part of its reputation. I don't know if Prada have plans to replicate that with Mulier. He's just a bit too...professional.

Regardless, I'm still excited because he'll undoubtedly pull much more from Gianni's repertoire than Donatella's. He's a master tailor with a great talent for sculpture and subtle refinement. That could DEFINITELY work at Versace because it's what early Gianni did.

in a way isn't this perfect, with Donatella so visible in the media continuing to act as an ambassador for the brand? she's synonymous with Versace so he doesn't need to be the face of it himself?

Pretty much. She'll be famous and draw media attention till the day she dies. And I wouldn't be surprised if there are plans to groom her daughter Allegra to handle the job after.
 
I thought Allegra hadn't been seen in public for years? didn't she almost die from her ED?

I think her ED complicated her a lot. I remember back in 2007 she looked really unwell but much better these days I think. But she IS involved in fashion theater or something. She's remained surprisingly private this whole time.
