Same trick as with janet. here too- understated first single, followed by obvious commercial behemoth.

"Velvet Rope" was once my favorite Janet song of all time. Probably still top five.

I first listened to this album while on a family trip in Arizona. I brought the bulky headphones and CD player with me while hiking in the canyons. I played the title track on repeat that trip, so I'm getting a bit nostalgic.
 
My cd had a glitch on it that meant there’s a little weird glitchy bit as she sings the first line. I was convinced it was part of the song until I got the vinyl 18 months ago.
 
I have not paid the title track anywhere near enough attention over the years. I often overlook it but god it's a right VIBE.

Love that you can tell immediately that the production has gone in a different direction on this album - it sounds of a different time, more up to date, more fresh but also quite understated, and there are new (and more global) influences in there. Jam and Lewis are fucking ridiculously adaptable producers.
 
I remember being in WH Smith’s with my pocket money looking at the albums out that week and not being sure what to go for but Ms Janet spoke to me and the rest is herstory
 
There really is an air of SOPHISTICATION around this album that none of the others quite exude.

It was of a different time. 1993 to 1997 was a seismic shift in music, particularly R&B.

'You' was some kind of weird buzz promo single-type thing in the US wasn't it? I remember it had a live video..
 
They actually were playing the same tactic in the USA as Mariah at this time and only "releasing" the obvious hits to maintain the string of top tens (GTIG, Every Time, Go Deep were airplay only - disqualified from the Hot 100 back then).
